Can An Byeong Hun's emotional win silence his critics and mark the start of a new era in golf?

A month ago, at the Royal Montreal Golf Club, the Americans fought dramatically against the International team. Amidst all the action, there was an intense rivalry and back-and-forth between the players. When Si Woo Kim celebrated with Stephen Curry’s ‘night night’ move, Wyndham Clark gave it back as Team USA won in the Sunday Singles. Replying to Clark’s cheeky response, An Byeong Hun tweeted out a sarcastic comment on the 2023 US Open winner.

He said, “You always have a guy in your group who doesn’t do s–t but talk s–t all day.” This was taken at heart by Clark that even after the South Korean pro deleted his tweet and apologized, he didn’t hesitate and gave Hun a taste of his own medicine. Wyndham Clark said, “Then there is the guy who didn’t have a tee time.” Taking a jab at Hun as he was dropped on Saturday by the International Team and didn’t tee up either in the morning or the evening session. Including Wyndham Clark, many fans also trolled Hun as the last time he won was at the BMW PGA Championship in 2015. So, no one thought he would win again.

But to the naysayers’ dismay, Hun has shown his prowess at the 2024 Genesis Championship. In front of his home crowd in Incheon, and his parents, grandparents, and other family members, Hun lifted the Genesis Championship trophy after nearly a decade and took home a $680,000 winner’s payout. After struggling for so long, the victory was emotional for Hun and his family. Right after he drained the final putt in the playoff against Tom Kim, Hun ran to hug his grandmother and cried in her embrace. Even his mother could not stop her tears as she witnessed Hun win, at last.

It was probably the last start of the year for the South Korean pro. He said in the post-round interview, “It’s a sweet ending for this year, it’s been a great year. This feels amazing, I’m going enjoy it for a while, then I’ve got to get back on it.” So, what’s next on Hun’s agenda? This fan perfectly summarized what the 33-year-old would be eyeing to win next. They said, “His next step is to win a major.”

Well before becoming a major winner, An Byeong Hun may try to become victorious on the PGA Tour as he has been a part of the league for nine years and doesn’t have a single win. So, for the 2025 season, the South Korean phenom’s goal list will probably include a PGA Tour win!
