Every year, hordes of fans are glued to their screens to watch their favorite golfers in action at Augusta National, keeping tabs on their every move. Consequently, all the biggest brands in the world vie to take advantage of the big moment as well, and who is a better ambassador of the game than Tiger Woods?

In the major’s 2022 edition, however, many fans were in for a surprise when Woods ditched Nike to sport FootJoy’s golfing shoes instead. The golfer’s relationship with the company dates back to 1996 when he just broke into the scene. Since then, the Woods-Nike partnership has paved the way for many iconic moments in the game. In fact, Woods’ Masters win in 2019 brought over $22 million to the megabrand from just screen time alone!

A year after avoiding his signature line, Woods did it once again during the 2023 Masters. This time around, he wore the FootJoy Premiere Packard, which reportedly costs $200. Now, his son, Charlie, seems to be following in his steps as well.

The 14-year-old, who is becoming a golfing force to be reckoned with, was spotted wearing FJ shoes just days ago. Charlie had recently gone viral after a video of him practicing at LA’s Riviera Country Club came to light. While his golf swing won the hearts of fans, they couldn’t help but take note of his choice of shoes!

Why did Tiger Woods ditch his signature Nike shoes at the Masters?

Tiger Woods’ first-ever five-year deal with Nike was worth around $40 million. After that expired, he inked another five-year deal for a whopping $100 million. He then reportedly made between $20 million-$40 million per annum for the following eight years!

So, why did the much-decorated golfer go for FootJoy over Nike? “I have very limited mobility now,” the golfer shared in 2022, referencing his unfortunate car crash from the previous year. “Just with the rods and plates and screws that are in my leg, I needed something different, something that allowed me to be more stable.

Later, in a press release, Nike welcomed Woods’ comeback to the golf course. “His story continues to transcend sport and inspire us all,” expressed the brand.  “As he continues his return, we will work with him to meet his new needs.” The golfer continues to don Nike apparel with his FootJoy shoes.

Per Business Insider, the 82-time PGA Tour winner’s last contract with the brand was signed in 2013 for $200 million. Many believe that Woods may leverage the footwear scenario for a brand-new deal down the road.
