The 2023 Ryder Cup was a magnanimous event and with each side’s pride on the line, there was a lot at stake. Eventually, the team that rose to prominence was Team Europe against Team USA. After beating the Americans for the 14th time, the Europeans celebrated their 5-point win.
Now, after two months from the patriotic battle, Europe’s veteran caddy Billy Foster’s comments on the 44th edition of Ryder Cup has highlighted three major takeaways that were not much explored before.

Billy Foster carries the bag of golfer Matt Fitzpatrick on the European team. The caddy has years of experience and has won 16 Ryder Cups, being a looper. His extensive experience of the event made him realize a few things, and he shared them on The NCG Golf Podcast. Here are three takeaways from the podcast.
1. Team USA’s trouble started way before the Ryder Cup: Foster, being a veteran and pro Ryder Cup caddie, stated that the camaraderie of Team USA has always been less compared to the Europeans. He revealed that after visiting the locker room “on a couple of occasions”, he found the bonding of the two teams “is like Halifax Town (Team USA) playing Manchester City (Team Europe).”
Furthermore, he commented on the absence of three golfers and 11 caddies of Team USA from the practice event of the Ryder Cup, whereas Team Europe was there with their full squad. As per Foster, Team Europe’s players like Rory McIlroy, Shane Lowry, and Jon Rahm stood up to take the place of legends like Sergio Garcia and Ian Poulter. Whereas the American team did not have any players to take responsibility, even though “on paper… they have better players.”
2. Ludvig Aberg getting the due recognition: Way before Luke Donald chose Ludvig Aberg to be a part of his heralded team, Foster had noticed the talent from afar. On the occasion of caddying Fitzpatrick at the RBC Canadian Open, Foster had a chance to witness Aberg play. He decided to do something about it.

Foster messaged Team Europe’s captain later in the night and asked him, “This lad is Henrik Stenson’s love child. Keep your eyes on him.” Although his selection meant notable golfers could not be a part of it, Ludvig proved his worth. He impressed everyone at the Ryder Cup with a 2-2-0 record. The rookie is now in contention for the 2023 PGA Tour Rookie of the Year Award.
Team Europe’s stance on Ryder Cup pays
3. The most controversial pay debate of the Ryder Cup: As we all know, Team USA’s Patrick Cantlay and Xander Schauffele were in hot waters for their stance on golfers getting played for the Ryder Cup. Cantlay was involved in the hategate while Schauffele’s father remarked that the PGA Tour was profiting off of the players by not paying them.

On the other hand, the Europeans never had any pay issues or would never have. As Foster claimed, if any European golfer asked for pay, “They’d get battered in the locker room by his fellow caddies and players.” Furthermore, he added that the money has always been an issue for the Americans and cleared “that’s not the way Europe works”.
