Facing scrutiny isn’t easy for anybody. Constant criticism and hatred can cause trauma to a person. Former golf reporter, Holly Sonders, became a victim of online hate after she asked an out-of-bounce question to Jordan Spieth in 2015. Years later, she expressed her honest thoughts on the whole experience at the podcast hosted by golf’s biggest social media entity, Paige Spiranac.

Back at the 2015 US Open, Sonders, who at the time worked for Fox Sports, was asked to interview the winner, Jordan Spieth after the final round. However, she then asked the golfer if he had packed an extra pair of clothes for the following day, in the event the tournament went into a playoff.

The question was met with widespread backlash from golf fans, with some labeling the former reporter “Dumb Bimbo”. Sonders finally revealed it all five years later during her interview at ‘Playing A Round with Paige Spiranac.’

During the full disclosure podcast session, Sonders states that the whole experience was ‘brutal and sexist’. She then mentioned that people even called her stupid and elaborated on how it eventually became the worst day of her life.

Holly Sanders said, “That was probably the worst day of my life, the next day. I remember sitting on the charter flight to the Women’s Open, watching all this come in (even by) some people who were friends of mine in the media”. The 35-year-old further stated that the question was a joke that many seem to have misunderstood.

“After that, I was like, ‘F*** it.’ If all these people I had given so much to in the world of golf are going to come down on me on that, then forget it”, said Sanders. Following the incident in 2015, she was demoted to post-game analysis from on-course interviews.

However, four years later, she decided to quit the world of golf and launched her fitness app “Team-Up Fitness”, and also has a huge following on Instagram. Sanders also made the headlines when it was reported that she was dating the Golden Boy of boxing, Oscar De La Hoya.

Just like Paige Spiranac, Holly Sonders too overcame public scrutiny. It is unfortunate that in this day and age they have to go through it. However, this can also set an example for the younger generation on how to prevail over the worst stage in life.
