Did Trump choose LIV Golf over PGA for profit, or is there more to the story?

October 2022 marked the official beginning of Donald Trump’s association with LIV Golf. The papers might have been signed long before that, however, we saw the first LIV Golf event hosted by the Trump National Doral Miami during this time. Ever since then, Trump has been an avid supporter and strong promoter of the Saudi-based series. While interviewing for CNN, Trump was also quoted saying, “take the money now,” encouraging pros to join LIV Golf.

His intent behind marketing the PGA alternative was clear when he said that LIV Golf Has Been Worth ‘Billions of Dollars’. And there is no doubt that the former President of the U.S.A. intended to benefit from its success.

The Trump International Golf Club hosted three LIV Golf Invitational Series events in 2023. While both the Trump Organization and LIV Golf have declined to comment on how beneficial this association has been for the Trump family, Eric Lipton from The New York Times suggested that they may have garnered significant profits indirectly through their involvement.

Considerable indirect revenue from the ‘Billions’ worth of LIV Golf business was enough to motivate Donald Trump to launch his next project.

Trump’s plans for the future of his Golf Club

According to various sources, the Trump National Bedminster and Doral saw a recent increase in revenue. Credit goes to LIV Golf’s announcement of hosting premium tournament events in the golf club hosted by the Trump family. This has encouraged Donald Trump to increase his investment in the sporting series.

Reports indicate that Donald Trump has announced the launch of his second golf club in Aberdeenshire, set to open in the summer of 2025. Named after his Lewis-born mother, the Macleod Course will feature 18 holes and include Scotland’s largest sand dunes.

Have an interesting take?

The dunes in Menie, Aberdeen, lost their status as a nationally important protected environment in 2020. However, Trump continues to claim it is one of the most sustainable courses in the world. In fact, Sarah Malone, Executive Vice-President of Trump International Scotland, described the course as ‘one of the great wonders in the world of golf.’

It’s evident that Trump is banking on financially lucrative opportunities to achieve more success. However, he could have easily gained the same level of recognition had he chosen to align with the PGA in the United States, especially given his role as the former President of the tournament’s home country. So, what led Trump to choose LIV Golf over the PGA?

The reason behind Trump’s strong support for LIV Golf

Trump has always been an avid fan of the sport. Even before his association with LIV Golf, Donald Trump actively indulged in the sport as a player and follower. In fact, he was even criticized for playing the game so often during his days as the President of the U.S.A. Being the accomplished businessman that he is, it would have made perfect sense for him to associate himself with the PGA Tour.

The truth is, he tried to make that a reality. Trump always dreamed of opening his own golf course and hosting PGA Tour events. There are various media records of his attempts to find common ground with PGA to allow him to contribute to the Tours. But, as we all know, that didn’t happen as the PGA of America ‘largely snubbed’ Trump, as quoted by Lipton. LIV Golf grasped on the same opportunity and their association with Donald Trump has since been quite profitable for both the parties.
