When Patrick Reed joined LIV Golf, he got many privileges in the form of three-day matches and a season with only limited tournaments played at a gap of every few weeks. But he also had to give up on things like the chance of playing in the Ryder Cup and, more importantly, his OWGR Ranking.

As the OWGR denied granting the points to the breakaway league, many golfers, including Reed, who joined the PIF-funded league had to bear the brunt of the absence of those points on their world rankings.

Since Patrick Reed turned pro in 2011, he has been among the prominent golfers who graced the PGA Tour greens. During his time on Tour, Reed secured 9 wins on the PGA Tour, which also includes one Masters win. Moreover, his incredible performance in multiple Ryder Cups earned him the nickname of ‘Captain America’. Reed’s exceptional performance not only reflected in his world ranking but also brought a lot of success and fortune in his life.

In 2015, after winning his fourth PGA Tour title at the Hyundai Tournament of Champions, Reed witnessed his lowest ranking at the time and landed on 14th. Then, in 2020, he experienced a significant improvement in his ranks, when he secured the no.6 spot for one week in June, which also became his career-best OWGR ranking. Before he left the PGA Tour, his rank was in the 30s.

However, Reed sealed his fate when he signed up with the rival league. In June he resigned from the PGA Tour and joined the LIV Golf circuit. The fall in his ranking has been steep ever since. He currently ranks at number 74. While a drastic drop, it still is better when compared to his other LIV companions, who are altogether out of the top 100 in the world.

At LIV, he is part of Team 4 Aces GC and has enjoyed some substantial earnings from the event’s $25 million purse. However, he sadly has no control over his falling ranks. A couple of months ago, when the committee refused the rank plea, he did not shy away from expressing his disappointment regarding the matter.

Reed’s outburst over OWGR after they denied

In October, when the governing body of the Official World Golf Ranking unanimously decided to not grant ranking to LIV, Reed was obviously angry at the decision and publicly criticized it and stated, “Obviously, it’s disappointing. Until the actual world ranking reflects the actual top players in the world, then to me it’s just kind of a broken system. Just because we play on a different tour, it shouldn’t matter.”
