The rivalry between LIV Golf and the PGA Tour is taking a new turn daily. Many PGA Tour golfers have commented on or against the LIV defectors. One such name that has come to highlight recently is Patrick Cantlay. He recently appeared on the NLU podcast and expressed his true feelings about the players of the Saudi-backed circuit. Is he supporting them, or is he against their actions?
Patrick Cantlay respects individual decisions
Twitter handle, Flushing It, posted a snippet of Cantlay’s statement. The host of the podcast asked the former number-one golfer in the World Amateur Golf Ranking, about his views on the defectors. He was asked if the decision of golfers choosing LIV Golf “bothered” or “hurt” the pro, or if he had any ill will for them. And if it would affect the collective pool. The PGA Tour player replied, “No, not at all. I think everyone has to make the decision for themselves that’s right.”

Talking about collective feelings, Cantlay explained, “ultimately, that’s above any sort of collective value or collective feelings. I think the right of the individual to do what they want is extremely important, and so if somebody thinks that the best decision for them.” He clarified his feelings regarding the defectors and said, “I have zero ill will against them at all. If they think that’s what’s gonna benefit them the most, then I say they should go do it.”
Cantlay always has balanced thoughts in his answers and responds without emotion; something that is refreshing to hear. And it couldn’t come at a better time. LIV golfers are already shocked by the disturbing clause introduced in their contracts. Despite shifting to LIV Golf League, many players want to play on the PGA Tour. However, if they break the contract, there is a penalty clause that states the golfers must pay two, three, or four times their signing bonuses. Cantlay’s support might be a bit helpful here.

Cantlay was strongly associated with a LIV move at the start of this season of 2023. Prior to an expanded 14-event schedule, Cantlay was hailed as an exciting goal for LIV CEO, Greg Norman. As a result, the pro golfer put an end to those rumors. However, also seemed to keep open the possibility of joining the divisive Saudi-backed circuit later. He believes that the new format is good for the game.
Ahead of the Sentry Tournament of Champions, Cantlay said, “I have no plans to do that as of now, which has been my stance for, you know, basically since the whole time.” But he also left room for more speculations when he said, “I think it’s been really good and will be good for professional golf in the long run.”
