Moving away from your caddie can be challenging for many. Unfortunately, for Shane Lowry, he will have to endure the loss of firing his caddie of nearly four and a half years. The announcement came after Lowry failed to make the cut at the DP World Tour’s Dubai Desert Classic. With no one to hold his golf bag, why did the Irish golfer sack Brian ‘Bo’ Martin?

Since his debut in 2009, the ever-humorous Lowry has had several moments of glitter in the sport. However, it was only after he hired Martin to be his caddie in 2018, that the 35-year-old achieved victories more frequently. The duo won three events together, including the European golfer’s maiden Major win, the 2019 Open Championship. So what led to the separation between the golfer and his caddie?

While the golfer seemed to be doing alright on paper, Lowry wasn’t pleased with the results. After claiming the Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship, the duo won its first tournament in 2019. Four years later in the same event, the Irish star shared the leaderboard in the penultimate round but collapsed on Sunday to give Victor Perez the win.

It was the last time they ever came close to winning as a golfer-caddie duo. The decision to sack Brian ‘Bo’ Martin was made public by Shane Lowry’s management company Horizon Sports Management yesterday. Lowry and Martin first publicly showed signs of friction at last year’s Masters, as the Irish golfer was seen yelling at his caddie to task in a four-lettered rant over a misclubbing incident on the 13th hole in the third round. A loss of “mojo” between the two in the heat of battle was also verified by sources close to the duo due to Lowry’s poor start to the season.

Nonetheless, as the 2019 Claret Jug winner looks to bounce back into his 2022-23 season, he will require a quality caddie to assist him. Since it’s only the end of January, Lowry will be seeking to hire someone who helps him in all the Majors and even the upcoming Ryder Cup. But as the clock ticks, the time for the caddie search will soon mount onto the golfer.
