Sergio Garcia has made a strong case for a spot in this year’s Ryder Cup after a thrilling victory at LIV Golf Hong Kong, where he shot a sparkling seven-under 63 to win by three strokes. The 45-year-old Spanish veteran, who has an unrivaled Ryder Cup record with more points earned than anyone in the event’s history (28.5), is now hoping to catch the eye of European captain Luke Donald, with whom he has been in touch.

Garcia’s flawless tournament at Hong Kong Golf Club, where he finished 18-under par, has reignited his hopes of teeing up against the United States in Bethpage in September, and he is relying on being one of Donald’s picks to make his 11th Ryder Cup appearance, but wait. Is? Is that another roadblock we see in Garica’s path?

In the latest episode of Fried Egg Golf on YouTube, Andy Johnson and Brendan Porath dive into the topic of Sergio Garcia’s notable absence from The Players Championship. Garcia, who has been making waves with his impressive performances on the LIV Golf circuit, will be missed at TPC Sawgrass. As Johnson notes, Garcia’s recent form has been impressive, with Porath adding that “he’s now won twice on LIV since July… and he’s got three other playoff losses, so he’s been on the doorstep a bunch.” Garcia’s competitive spirit and lovable yet fiery personality always made him a joy to watch at the event. Additionally, Porath even went on to say that he will be willing ot put in a wager for Garcia for the upcoming Masters. Well, with the Spanish golfer’s current form, he just be a big competitor.

“He just hates losing,” Porath says, chuckling. “He’s an all-time competitor… and I think he’s also just a little bit of an [expletive] in a lovable way.” Garcia’s absence will undoubtedly be felt at the Players Championship, and fans will miss his energetic presence on the course. Poath also shares an interesting anecdote about Garcia’s reputation for being ultra-competitive, even in local games with club members in Austin, Texas. This reputation, combined with his impressive recent form, makes his absence from The Players Championship all the more notable. Additionally, his win in the 2008 version of th event was quite memorable.
