The first event of the 2023 FedEx Cup play-off is underway at Memphis but the focus is not on the event, it’s on something else. Seventy players are eyeing the title and the $20 million purse. After Round 1, Jordan Spieth is leading the scoreboard. The American golfer carded a bogey-free round and scored 7-under 63 at TPC Southwind, Memphis.

In an ideal world, he should have been the talking point in the golfing world but that’s not the case. It’s instead Phil Mickelson and betting revelations involving him. Spieth couldn’t stay clear of the matter either at the post-round presser. Let’s see what he said.

Amid the post-season, the golf world is busy reacting to the bombshell that was dropped a couple of days ago concerning Phil Mickelson. Over three decades, Lefty has been alleged to have bet approximately $1 billion or perhaps more in different sports.

The intricate details of that timeline of Mickelson’s life are now revealed to the public by his then-gambling partner Billy Walters. The book is titled: Gambler: Secrets from a Life at Risk. According to Billy, Lefty made 858 bets of approximately $220,000 and 1,115 bets of the amount nearing $110,000 from 2010 to 2014.

In his interview, Jordan Spieth was asked about the bombshell. The media was curious to know what the locker room talk was about a topic that is on everyone’s mind in the golf world. Spieth responded, “I mean, I would say people were maybe a bit surprised at the amount of — I haven’t really seen a whole lot on it. I just saw what some people sent me and stuff, and it was so quick this morning that even if I wanted to comment, I don’t think it’s a good idea.”

The awkwardness in Spieth’s demeanor was quite evident while answering the question. Another big PGA Tour golfer, Rory McIlroy had a totally different approach on the matter.

What do the book excerpts on Mickelson reveal?

Billy Walters’ book will release on 22nd August 2023. But the infamous excerpts have already found their way out to the public. An Instagram post revealed that once Lefty was so confident about his odds that he asked Walters to place a $400,000 wager on the US Team during the 2012 Ryder Cup. He himself was among the 12 members who were playing.
