Is Bryson DeChambeau's career on a downward spiral despite his LIV Golf success?

When he was given the captaincy of Team USA for the Ryder Cup, Keegan Bradley said that he would be picking the best golfers for the team. Of course, we cannot really know who those players are because there is no single arena where they are judged, which leaves Bryson DeChambeau and his LIV Golf counterparts in Ryder Cup purgatory. After missing out on the President’s Cup, will DeChambeau and other LIV Golfers be able to play in the Ryder Cup?

For LIV Golf, Bryson DeChambeau is a top player. He is currently 8th in the standings, and his team, Crushers GC, is on top as they head into Dallas for the Team Championship this weekend. Although he hasn’t won a LIV Golf event this year, his team has finished first on four occasions. His presence on social media has gained him millions of fans and brought attention to the Saudi PIF-backed tournament. However, for the PGA Tour, he is seen as a renegade who is not allowed to earn OWGR points to rank against the PGA Tour’s best players.

For golf fans, DeChambeau is the 2024 PGA Championship runner-up and U.S. Open champion. But for the Ryder Cup, and in the Ryder Cup points system, he is currently third in the world. However, the points system will not restart until January next year.

Bradley has also commented on the issue, shifting responsibility to the PGA of America, saying, “the PGA of America, they—we’re going to have the 12 best players, so they need to figure that out, if that’s their problem.” To play in the Ryder Cup, a golfer must be a member of the PGA of America. Even if they are suspended from the PGA Tour, they can still be members of the PGA of America. However, the organization has yet to clarify its stance. So, it remains unclear whether players like Brooks Koepka and Bryson DeChambeau will still be members by next year’s Ryder Cup, despite earning Ryder Cup points.

Is Bryson DeChambeau's career on a downward spiral despite his LIV Golf success?

Have an interesting take?

To qualify automatically for the Ryder Cup team, a player must be in the top six of the Ryder Cup points system. This ranking is available on the Ryder Cup website. Firstly, players who made the cut in the 2024 majors and the Players Championship will receive 1 point per $1,000 of prize money they earned.

Secondly, points will be allotted based on the events and values of the 2025 PGA Tour, which will be announced at a later date. The main issue for LIV Golf players is whether they will be members of the PGA of America next year. Last year, Brooks Koepka was able to play in the Ryder Cup because he was a captain’s pick and a member of the PGA of America due to a grace period through 2024. It remains to be seen whether Bryson DeChambeau, Brooks Koepka, or Dustin Johnson will still be members next year.
