Before the tournament in Scotland commenced, the former golf pro had her fair share of picks for winners! Her top four picks were: Tommy Fleetwood, Tyrrell Hatton, Rickie Fowler, and Rory McIlroy. However, adding McIlroy to her list was certainly not easy for the 33-year-old. The reason was that the Irish Golfer had broken her heart too many times with his performances and finishes this year, whenever she had picked him to finish at the top!

Fortunately, this time the 4-time major winner came through for Spiranac, and her pick was spot on when he grabbed the win on Sunday. However, although she had chosen him as one of her hot picks for the Genesis Scottish Open, she also made it clear that she would never pick him for the major tournaments because of the heartbreak she had to endure during all the previous tournaments.

The Irishman had missed two consecutive cuts at the Players Championship and Masters. His game in the following weeks was not so pleasant either at Quail Hollow. However, at Oak Hill, it seemed like the golfer had found his rhythm again. He carded a T7 finish on the leaderboard during the PGA Championship and then finished as the US Open runner-up, shocking everyone. Cashing in on his hot streak, McIlroy also performed extremely well in Scotland last week and picked up his first win since January. It certainly was a victory that was long overdue!

The golfer is currently having a good run too. He placed in the top 10 at his last six appearances on the course, including the previous two majors. Moreover, hailing from the UK, McIlroy is more familiar with the courses and how to handle the erratic weather that may affect the final major in Liverpool.

The golfer has, to date, made 13 appearances in the Open Championship. These include six top-10 finishes, the most recent being T3 in 2022. McIlroy also lifted the Claret Jug in 2014 at the same course.
