From his early days, Mickelson had earned a notorious reputation for gambling. In some instances, he was said to have listened to radio broadcasts of matches he had bet on while he was playing in tournaments. But when last month Walters accused Phil of intense gambling, the world got to know how big Mickelson’s addiction was.
Walters revealed all these dark secrets in his book “Gambler: Secrets from a Life at Risk,” which was released in August. While promoting his book, he gave an interview to The Action Network which covers sports betting picks and tips. In a long interview, Walters reiterated his feelings on Mickelson.
When the interviewer asked him “You believe that Phil Mickelson is the second biggest gambler in American history?” He replied, “No. When I was referring to Phil Mickelson I was talking about an individual.” He said that as a group there are some people who have bet more money than him. But he also added that nobody is single-handedly better than Phil “I don’t know anybody individually who has bet more money than Phil Mickelson. When the host asked, “In the history of America?” Walters replied, “That I am aware of.” Earlier in his defense, Mickelson had only said that he didn’t bet on the Ryder Cup.

Mickelson made thousands of bets in the last decade
According to Walters, Mickelson made 858 bets of $220,000 and 1,115 bets of $110,000 between 2010 to 2014. He has bet $110,000 to win $100,000 in total and suffered massive losses in the past decades. In 2015, Phil’s name also appeared in court documents related to a money laundering case which stated that nearly $3 million was transferred from him to an intermediary of “an illegal gambling operation.”
