A third position doesn’t seem all that bad, but when it comes to Phil Mickelson, a golfer known for his exceptional skills and numerous titles, it’s clear that he’s always striving for more. However, at LIV Golf Hong Kong, Mickelson’s quest for victory was overshadowed by Sergio Garcia’s stunning performance. Garcia secured a double victory with an impressive 18-under total, his final round of 63 (-7) a masterclass of bogey-free golf, featuring five birdies and an eagle. This outstanding performance helped him edge out Dean Burmester by just one stroke.

But let’s be real, Mickelson’s not getting any younger. He’s still got the passion and drive, but his body’s not cooperating like it used to. Yet, he’s refusing to give up. He’s still tweaking his game, trying to find ways to stay competitive with the young guns.

Speaking at the LIV Golf Hong Kong press conference, Mickelson acknowledged that his game had been a bit “boring” of late, relying on precision rather than power. “I’ve got to find another way to beat these guys, and so I hit a lot of fairways this week. It lets my iron play come out,” he said. When asked about his strategy for the next tournament, Mickelson replied, “We need more length. I’ll change the setup of my clubs a little bit. I might even change the ball.” He also mentioned that he had used a Callaway Elite driver in Adelaide and did really well hitting fairways there.

Mickelson’s self-awareness and willingness to adapt are hallmarks of a true champion. Garcia’s impressive win at LIV Golf Hong Kong has also thrown down the gauntlet, and Mickelson will need to be at the top of his game to keep pace. “I’m figuring it out,” Mickelson said, confident that he can find the extra length he needs to stay competitive. “I’m not going to overpower them, I’m going to find another way to beat them.” He further noted, “I’ve got to find another way to beat these guys… I’ve had a really good week though; I putted well, hit a lot of good shots.” Can he maintain this momentum and find the extra length he needs? The next few tournaments will be telling.
