The three-time major winner, Padraig Harrington, became the oldest player to make the cut at the 2023 Open Championship. When asked about the same in the press conference, he replied that he had no idea of it. “The beauty is that I’m not aware of it,” said the golf pro as he opened up about his age and his game.
He further added that age was “Completely irrelevant.” “I don’t think of age at all. Not in any shape or form,” he said. The Irishman stated that he did not think of his age every day when he woke up, and neither did he on the golf course when he played the sport. Although his age was on the older side of the fields he competed in, Harrington opened up about how he just wanted to give his best until he believed he couldn’t.
The 3-time major winner, despite being an above-average age at the event, was able to outperform all his opponents in the age group to make the cut on Friday. While his American counterpart (when it comes to being above the average age), John Daly, however, failed to make the cut, scoring a total of 12-over-par in the first two rounds even after putting up an impressive performance post-surgery.
Harrington scored a 3-over-par on Friday to make the cut, and while it was a spectacular score given his age, he’s seen many better days at The Open!

Padraig Harrington’s history with the Open Championship
The Irishman was able to place T69 by the end of the third round with a score of 5-over-par with one more round to go at the 2023 Open Championship. “The only thing that’s held me back for three days is some good putts not falling the right way at the right time,” he said while addressing the press after the round. In the past, however, the Irishman has seen many good days at the major.
Harrington had started his run at the 1996 Open Championship, where he finished in T18. Going forward, he had won the Open consecutively for two years in 2007 and 2008 with a score of 7-under-par 277 and 283 (+3), respectively. Despite the wins, he had a bumpy ride throughout the later years, failing to make the cut a total of seven times after 2008.
