Is Lexi Thompson the future of American golf, or is it time for new stars to shine?

Lifting the trophy for the America Team on Sunday was utterly important. This will mark the final appearance of Lexi Thompson at the International event after playing it for seven consecutive seasons. She had a grand entry as her name was announced to play against Celine Boutier on Sunday. As she walked towards the first tee, all the fans went completely gaga and they cheered her name and said, “Thank you, Lexi.”

However, she could not have the dream farewell as Celine Boutier took the European team to a 1 up in their round. Nonetheless, she did walk out as a part of the winning team. Thompson only has a little over three months in her tenure to be part of the schedule. So, where will she play next? The LPGA Tour is headed to Ohio from Virginia for the Kroger Queen City Championship presented by P&G in the coming weekend.

The 144-player field tournament is scheduled to take place at the TPC River’s Bend from September 19 to September 22. As the LPGA Tour announced the official field list, Lexi Thompson too will be part of the field. She is currently ranked at 39 on the Rolex Rankings, which automatically made her eligible for the tournament as a part of the top 80 players. But what is at stake for her if she wins in Ohio?

The field of the Kroger Queen City Championship is starting studded with some of the best golfers on the Tour. Nelly Korda, the World No. 1, will debut at the tournament while defending champion Minjee Lee, who beat Charley Hull in a two-hole playoff last year, is back to win another title. Joining them is gold medallist Lydia Ko. It will indeed be a tough fight, however, the purse compared to the field is comparatively low.

The tournament at the TPC River’s Bend boasts a prize money of $2 million, which is the same as last year’s. Minjee Lee took home $300,000 last year, and Charley Hull took home $182,127. Looks like this year too, the winner’s share will remain the same. The full prize money payout is yet to be announced. Stay tuned to find out what happens the upcoming weekend.
