Jim Furyk and Mike Weir defend the Presidents Cup—are they right to downplay the hotel concerns?

Trouble has been lurking in since the first day of the 2024 Presidents Cup week. One of them is the week-long strike of the Hotel workers at the Queen Elizabeth Hotel since last Wednesday. Now, this is supposed to be the host hotel for the event. As per reports, the union at the hotel said that the employer refused to take back concession demands. Now, how is it going to affect the Presidents Cup?

Since it is the host hotel, all the spectators will be flying in to book their stays in the hope of sharing the hotel with the players. However, due to the lack of workers, they only met with ill fate. Adding to the misery for the audience was the fact that the protest had blocked the roads, which took them more than the estimated time to reach the venue. So now, what does that mean for the stays of the players?

At the post-round presser at Royal Montreal on Thursday, both captains were asked if the strike affected their bookings. To that, the American team captain revealed that there has been no impact on them. However, he went on to add that the protest had caused a ruckus while they got on the bus, with noises and increased traffic. “But it hasn’t changed our team room. Hopefully not for Mike, as well, with the food,” he added.

The American team captain further added that the staff had done a great job having added a lot of managers who have taken up the jobs in staff’s absence. To this, Mike Weir stated that the situation has been pretty much the same for the International Team. “Just coming out with a coffee in the morning and getting on the bus. It’s a bit loud, but other than that, nothing affecting the team rooms or anything like that,” he added.

They were further asked about the noises during the blocked roads, and if they were cheering for the players. To which Weir began with an optimistic reply. He stated that maybe they were. Later, though, he went on, adding that they were not cheering for anything, but were only making noise. While Furyk stated that they had no interest in the teams, they were just doing their thing.

Have an interesting take?

Well, you might think this was the only misery that came ahead of the Presidents Cup. Unfortunately, it was not just noises that left the player frustrated during their ride to the hotel.

The International Team reached the hotel in three hours

The Presidents Cup this year has chosen a venue that is located in the suburb of Île-Bizard. To reach the course, it is rather necessary to cross the only bridge that connects it to the Island of Montreal. However, the bridge has been under construction since March. As a result, it has been blocking roads, causing serious traffic concerns.

The residents, merchants, and local mayors are already frustrated with the chaos and delays. Now, even the players are added to the list. According to the report updated by Dan Rapaport, the traffic situation has been the same all week during the event. It took the International team almost ninety minutes to get back to the hotel, which is of course not an ideal situation. What ill luck do you think awaits the Presidents Cup next?
