Anthony Kim’s roaring return to the golf world is not going as expected. Kim rose from ashes like a true phoenix, only to be submerged in a heap of roadblocks. Since signing up with the breakaway league as a wildcard for 1 year, all Kim has garnered so far is a bunch of last finishes and a meager sum of money, thanks to the PIF-backed league’s commitment to a no-cut, guaranteed-pay format.

LIV Golf Miami is turning out to be no different as the 38-year-old continues to be at the bottom of the roster, tied for 53rd with a score of 13-over-par, making it his end-of-roster streak since his 53rd finish in Jeddah and 50th finish in Hong Kong. The once-glorious star has also missed the cut at an Asian Tour event in the past few weeks. His second shot at golf, after surmounting the wrath of “scam artists” posing as friends who blackmailed him and undergoing a “rude awakening” at the hands of his doctors, which led to his discovering the frailty of life, seems to be slipping out of proportion.

Adding to his misery is the massive backlash he has been undergoing because of his poor performance at the hands of his once-loyal fans. After all, the once-Tiger Woods compatriot seems to have fallen from graces after returning since his disappearing act in 2012, and his golfing game is likely on life support with bleak chances of a revival.

Talking about his struggles, he recently revealed that he had not just run off with the insurance money as per popular belief, but has undergone multiple surgeries to regain form since and has been fighting with a life-threatening, unrevealed illness likely caused by his “addictive personality” and people he surrounded himself with who “enjoyed the same things.”

But it was not just physical struggles that stopped Kim from returning to the game earlier, but also mental and emotional struggles. Addressing this, he said, “I’ve needed help for a long time. I knew I had battles mentally that I’ve never talked about with anybody, and just kept to myself. Through lots of conversations with very important people in my life, I got help, and I started turning my life around about a year and a half ago.”

While his current performances signal a dimly lit return, the new and reformed Anthony Kim does not see this as the end of his career tunnel. So what does he think is next for him?

After years of giving up on himself and on golf, Kim seems to have rewired his thought process and believes he could “absolutely do it at that level again.” The rite of passage he has undertaken since stepping into the role of a father has left him “prepared more than ever for success.”

In the confident star’s words, “It was my mistakes that are the reasons that I fell down into this deep hole. Having better people around this time definitely helps.” Kim’s persistent failure in attempts to use the setbacks being posed in his revival positively has been met with widespread mistrust in the hearts of fans.
