Dustin Johnson enjoyed a sweet deal while he changed ships to LIV Golf and became a defector. He was welcomed with a $150 million package and many additional perks, which he didn’t get at the PGA Tour.
But there is one place where Dustin or any LIV golfer cannot defeat any PGA Tour golfer as of now and that is the OWGR ranking. After a year of enjoying his perks, Johnson has suffered a setback with his rankings.

The merger has done nothing to fasten the process of LIV golfers getting the OWGR rankings. And LIV players who abandoned the PGA Tour to seek better advantages are paying the prize for it. All the defectors are suffering from falling ranks and now it is Dustin Johnson’s turn.
Till now he has earned more than $40 million in LIV prize money, but his ranking continues to fall. Johnson, who once used to hold the number 1 world rank in the world, has fallen to no. 89.
In February 2017, Johnson climbed the ladder to the no.1 position in the world and spent 64 consecutive weeks there. He was the 5th player to spend the longest time as the number 1 golfer. In 2018, he returned to the position and kept on jumping back in 2019 and 2020. The last time he was ranked as the top player was in July 2021. In his career, he has spent a total of 135 weeks as the number-one golfer.
The week he announced that he will be joining LIV Golf, his ranking was 13th. But since then, it has continued to fall. Had he performed well at the Open Championship last week, then it would have made a positive effect on his ranking, but Johnson lost that chance too by failing to cut.

What is the status of ranking with the LIV Golf?
A few days ago, OWGR board members held a meeting to discuss LIV Golf. However, at the meeting, new aspects have unfolded as the officials have expressed concerns over some cheating allegations at the LIV Golf Orlando event. Though LIV representatives have denied the accusations, they are still presented with more hurdles. OWGR is also concerned about the multi-year contracts of LIV Players which will prevent them from getting relegated. LIV Golf, in response, has announced a relegation and promotion plan.
Nevertheless, the merger has received a final date of 31st December 2023 to finalize the procedure. Perhaps Dustin Johnson and other LIV golfers will be able to enjoy better OWGR rankings after that.
