Four-time PGA Tour winner Russell Henley endured a painful 854-day wait before winning the 2024 Arnold Palmer Invitational. But for what reason did he remain so regressive? Former PGA Tour pro turned broadcaster Smylie Kaufman recently shared insight into Henley’s difficulties.
Henley’s path has been one of perseverance and fortitude. The Georgia native has always been known for his accurate iron play and putting abilities, having made headlines as a rookie at the 2013 Sony Open with a stunning victory. But as Kaufman noted, he has frequently stumbled due to the mental side of the game, particularly when it comes to handling Sunday pressure. What changed, then? And how did he end the cycle at last? Exposing the shortcomings of Russell Henley’s drought
In a recent episode of The Smylie Show, co-host Charlie Hulme and host Smylie Kaufman explored the nuances of Henley’s long title hiatus and eventual comeback. The conversation revealed a crucial weakness in Henley’s strategy that might have played a role in the 854 days that passed between his victories.
Charlie Hulme noted that Henley may have had fewer scoring opportunities because of his cautious approach, especially his hesitancy to target certain pin positions because of his ball flight and stroke shape. “It’s almost like what you’re talking about with Corey Connors; certain pins he doesn’t go for because of his ball flight and shot shape. And same thing with Russ, where the green set up a certain way… Which pins do I have enough room to land it short and kind of run it up to?” he stated. Henley’s cautious approach cut risks but may have cost birdie chances on attack-friendly courses. Hulme stressed the need for a sharp caddy and pinpoint execution.
Then, Smylie Kaufman went on to say that Henley’s keen grasp of course management and analytical disposition are both advantages and disadvantages. “He’s a really cerebral pro player… He understands time and scores better than some other players,” he said. Kaufman also noted that Henley’s self-imposed pressure and elevated expectations might have caused nervous performances on Sundays, which could have resulted in missed short putts or unanticipated collapses. “You feel the nerves, and sometimes it’s hard,” Kaufman stated.
Henley’s road back to victory meant tackling caution and pressure head-on. His breakthrough at the Arnold Palmer Invitational proves he did just that. Here’s how it happened!
Henley’s Arnold Palmer Invitational victory
Russell Henley’s triumph at the Arnold Palmer Invitational was a statement of his strategic skill and mental toughness were on display during the competition, at the Bay Hill Club & Lodge, particularly in the last round. After ten holes, behind by three strokes, Henley launched an incredible comeback. He closed the distance with a birdie on the 14th hole, but his incredible chip-in eagle on the 16th changed the course of the event. While shocking the audience, this crucial moment put a great deal of strain on Collin Morikawa, the leader at the time. With a one-stroke victory and an 11-under-par finish, Henley won his fifth PGA Tour championship and his first since 2022.
