Rory McIlroy faced a lot of disappointment this week. After a poor start at TPC Sawgrass and a just as bad second day, he found himself heading home early. But on the bright side of it, he now has more time to focus on the next events. But which is that? With the extensive PGA Tour schedule, golfers obviously can’t compete in every event and often skip a few. And this month the Irishman will do so too, and a heartbreak reason lies behind his decision!
Rory McIlroy opens up about his PGA Tour schedule.
While many of the top-ranked players now head to the third round of the Players Championship, the 2019 winner is not among them. Failing to make the cut on Friday, McIlroy now heads home early. And although he is disappointed, he has tons to look forward to, especially with the first major championship of the year fast approaching, and a few events in between.

After his second round, the Irishman was asked in the post-round interview about his schedule for the future now that he wasn’t playing this weekend. The reporter asked him if he would play at the Valero Texas Open like he did last year or whether it would only be the $20 million WGC-Dell Technologies Match Play.
The former world No. 1 didn’t need time to think about it. He already knew where he was headed in his immediate future. “No, no, I wasn’t particularly fond of that last year, so no, it’s just Match Play,” he said, dismissing the Texas Open, where, just like this week, he had failed to make the cut last year. He was now only going to be on the course at the WGC and then head straight to Augusta!

With just a month left before the Masters Tournament, the green jacket event is now on every golfer’s mind. And especially McIlroy’s. After all, it’s the only major championship he hasn’t yet won! Narrowly missing out on victory last year, the 4-time major winner wants nothing more than a green jacket this year. And a win would see him join the elite group of golfers with a career grand slam!
For him now, everything is just a stepping stone to the Augusta event. “From now all the way until the start of April, it’s really just about getting ready for Augusta,” he stated with determination. “Just making sure my game is in shape for Augusta… that I familiarize myself with the golf course again.” It certainly seems like the Masters keeps Rory up at night sometimes.
