The PGA Tour announced that it will review changes it wants for the 2026 season on November 18, 2024. The changes are intended to improve competition and the pace of play. The proposed changes include a reduction of field sizes, earning PGA Tour cards will get more difficult, and Monday qualifiers will be omitted. This has left not just the golf community but some of the pros frustrated.
Lucas Glover in an interview stated how frustrated he was with the changes. “Tour players, yes, you do affect the people you are playing with and the people behind you. That’s a selfish act. So, speed up,” he said. Before the allegations could come to an end, Padraig Harrington, who is set to appear at the Charles Schwab Cup Championship this week, discussed the new rules on the PGA Tour with Golf Channel’s Golf Today.
When Eamon Lunch asked him about the development, he shook his head and said, “Terrible. Just terrible.” It is players like Tiger Woods, Jordan Spieth, and Patrick Cantlay on the advisory council who are agreeing with the changes. We are not saying, Irishman is, “At the end of the day, the people on the inside are voting to keep the thing tighter and more closed. Why don’t we just have 12 people in the event if I’m included and everybody else can go home.”

Although there is pressure to get the fields finished on time with the regular 156 players, it is for players to deal with. Otherwise the Tour is just running fine according to him. “The slow play issue is like driving in rush hour traffic, there’s too many people on the golf course and the tee times are too tight. So yes, this is a way of solving one of the big issues in golf, the pace of play. But you want to give everybody the opportunity,” he further added.

Jay Monahan announced several changes in the gameplay for the 2026 season. From reducing the field sizes and handing out fewer Tour cards to getting rid of the Monday qualifiers, an entire list was passed out. As it turns out, a lot of it touched the strings of the already annoyed spectators. Agreeing with Padraig Harrington, they left comments like, “Agreed” and “he could not be more right.” The opinion regarding these changes seems to be divided.

Michael S Kim somewhat agreed with the changes as he posted his take on X, “To be honest, I don’t love the changes but that’s probably because I feel threatened by the number of cards going down from 125 to 100. It’s my job to improve and continue to get better and make sure I’m not in the situation I am this yr.”
LIV Golf has faced criticism for its large financial incentives aimed at attracting established players while also being accused of being somewhat insular and exclusive in terms of offering opportunities to up-and-coming talent. It was accused of focusing on big names like Phil Mickelson, Jon Rahm, and others instead of focusing on rising stars. And as per the new rules introduced, it turns out the accuser has started following the same path.
As per the changes, fewer KFT guys will now be making it to the PGA Tour. One fan commented, “It makes sense after a few years of complaining that LIV is closed off from bringing in new talent the PGA Tour would then go and do the same thing.” Another made a suggestion, quite disappointed with the widespread rifts. “Hear hear! Regressive outcome! The world needs a truly world-class competition! If PGAT doesn’t seize that while they have the chance, someone else… probably LIV, will!” They wrote.

Well, that is pretty much the state, and everyone is left frustrated. Even pros like Rory McIlroy and others have expressed how the big names of golf should come together more often than just the majors. So is the golf community. Taking to his comment, one of them wrote, “Paddy on poinsiezeusual.”
