The European Tour’s Acciona Open de España is returning this week. Played since 1912, the tournament, earlier known as the Spanish Open, is the national open golf championship of Spain. This year it will be played at Club de Campo Villa de Madrid in Madrid with national pride Jon Rahm returning as a defending champion.

A total of 144 players will be participating in the event which will have a mix of regular players of the DP World Tour and many Spanish golfers who will give their best to win the national title. This is the 96th edition of the Tournament. Let’s take a look at who are the top five contenders for this weekend in Spain.

Jon Rahm

Fresh off the Ryder Cup victory, world No. 3 Jon Rahm is the biggest name at the event. He is a three-time champion at the event. His first win came in 2018 with two strokes over Paul Dunne, and then in 2019, and then he won last year with a margin of six strokes over Matthieu Pavon. This year, he has already added 4 victories to his name. He has won the Sentry Tournament of Champions, The American Express, the Genesis Invitational, and the Masters Tournament.

Justin Rose

The next name on the list to grab a win this week is England’s Justin Rose. Like Rahm, Justin too was part of Team Europe in the Ryder Cup. This year, he has won the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-AM in February. Other than that he has made the Top 10 finish in the British Masters, Canadian Open, The Players, and the PGA Championship.

He also made it in the top 40 at the three FedEx Cup playoffs. Rose is among the leading names on the European Tour and is currently sitting on no. 36 in the world ranking. He will make an attempt to seize another victory this year.

Yannick Paul

Number third on the list is Yannick Paul. The 29-year-old German has made a name for himself lately. This season he has finished in T6 in Open De France, a solo 10th on D+D Real Czezh Masters, T8 in British Masters, and sixth in the Championship in Japan. His best results this year were a solo second finish in the Thailand Classic and the Indian Open. With his first win on the European Tour last year, the world No. 96 Paul is searching for another win this year.

Thorbjorn Olesen

Thorbjorn Olesen is the fourth in the run for the Spanish National Tournament this week. This year he has won the Thailand Classic and finished in the Top 10 in the Open De France, Soudal Open, and Indian Open. Apart from that, he has also made some top 20 finishes this year. His consistency this season makes him a strong contender in Madrid. He is currently 90th on the OWGR ranking.

Ewen Ferguson

The fifth strongest player in Spain is 27-year-old Dutch golfer Ewen Ferguson. This season he has made Top 10 finishes in the Dutch Open, British Masters Jonsson Workwear Open, and the SDC Championship. Currently, on 136th in the ranking, Ferguson is in the hunt for another win on the tour.

Prize money and other details of the Championship

The Open De España will be played from 12 – 15 October at the Club de Campo Villa de Madrid and has a prize purse of $1,854,396. The course’s design and location in the capital make it one of the most prestigious golf facilities in Spain. The course has hosted many European Tour events. The Open de España has been played here nine times and the Madrid Open has been also hosted here 9 times.

The price of tickets starts at 10 euros for the members of the Spanish Golf Federation and for children under the age of 16 years old and it is 20 euros for the general public.
