This year the responsibility of European captaincy has fallen on the shoulders of Susann Pettersen. The Norwegian golfer will be leading the team in Europe in 2023 and 2024 in Finca Cortesin in Spain. And she is a Solheim veteran. She has played for Team Europe nine times and holds immaculate experience in the prestigious event.

As the event begins this week in Spain, Pettersen expressed her views on the expansion of the tournament and women’s golf. Giving a special interview before the tournament begins, she happily gloats over how far women’s golf has come.

Solheim Cup captain is happy to see golf growing worldwide

Susan Pettersen has played in the Solheim Cup in 2002, 2003, 2005, 2007, 2009, 2011, 2013, 2015 and 2019. She was the vice-captain under Catriona Matthew when team Europe emerged victorious at the Inverness Club in Ohio in 2021, These experiences make her a perfect fit to be leading the team. 

Recently she was interviewed by Sky Sports and asked Pettersen to play her first Solheim Cup 21 years ago. How much does she feel that how much has grown since then as an event?

 She replied, “We just love every moment. It’s fun to the level of golf that’s played during this week. I always find it amazing. And that’s the beauty of much play it is exciting. Women’s golf is about to explode.” 

Pettersen continued. “It’s massive in Asia, it’s big in the US. It’s obviously getting stronger and stronger here in Europe. I think the European team kind of reflects further the strength of the European talents coming through at this point. It’s going to be fun to see all these players go out there and just embrace it.”

Susann Pettersen wants to take the European team to the next level.

Pettersen was selected to be leading for the back-to-back Solheim earlier this year in February. After her selection, she started her planning quickly. Pettersen said, “This will allow us to build a strategy and a philosophy for the team that we can keep, which will offer more consistency for the players and enable them to focus on their performance. My focus is on getting the team around the players and the atmosphere right and then taking that up to the next level.”

This is her first time as the captain of the boat and she wishes to take it to the final destination of ultimate win.
