With the PGA Tour going ever so strong with another incredible event at the Arnold Palmer Invitational, the debate between team events in golf has become louder. The LIV Golf Series has become the latest torchbearer for group events, while the PGA Tour has found success in the traditional format. But what does LPGA star, Lexi Thompson, feel about golf’s latest innovation?
Lexi Thompson argues between solo and team events
Despite her age, Thompson is a seasoned golfer on the LPGA Tour. Her career started out as an enthralling 12-year-old as the youngest golfer ever to qualify to play in the U.S. Women’s Open. Now an eleven-time winner on the tour, she has seen many come and go in the sport.

But the onset of the LIV Golf Series has changed the dynamics of the sport. Once considered strictly as a solo event, the rebel league has formed teams of four that play against each other in a team-based competition.
Many consider it to be a breakaway from the age-old golf rules. But what does Thompson make of it? Considering her affinity towards the Solheim Cup, the premier golf tournament between the best players from Europe and the USA, the 28-year-old was appreciative of the distinct experience.
“It is such a unique experience, bringing out that other attitude of people, which is great to see,” she said about the event. “Whether it’s Solheim Cup, International Crown, or any team event, I want to be on that team representing my country.”
Thompson also felt the pressure of representing one’s country in such events brings about the player’s best performance. “When you are flying your flag for your country or continent, you have that drive. You’re not only fighting for yourself out there, you have your partner next to you. You’re fighting for your country and representing it,” she said.

When will Thompson return back to action?
With the Solheim Cup set to be held in Spain later this year, Thompson is eyeing a return to regular action. Her last appearance came at the Aramco Saudi Ladies International at Royal Greens Golf & Country Club, where she finished tied for third.
The celebrated golfer has been taking short breaks from her travels to rejuvenate herself. “It is important to get the right amount of rest I need and make sure my game is in the right spot for the tournaments that I thoroughly enjoy and the golf courses that I really like and suit my game the best,” she said.
