Sepsis claims another life—should there be more awareness about this silent killer?

Losing your pet is a gut-wrenching experience that can leave a never-ending void in our lives. And when it’s your first ever pet that you lose, the pain is truly unimaginable. Unfortunately, Padraig Harrington is suffering from the pain of saying goodbye to his loyal companion, Wilson. He got Wilson in 2019, and the four-legged furry baby became Harrington’s family member, a trusted friend, and a constant source of comfort and joy. So one can imagine the unbearable pain that Harrington is going through.

The golfer went on his X to let the fans know that his furry friend was no more. “A sad day for my family and me today, as we lost Wilson after a week of fighting sepsis,” the golfer wrote. While it is almost impossible to put into words the love we have for our pets, Harrington did give it a try. “We had a great five years together, and we will always remember the good times he gave us,” wrote Harrington as a loving tribute to Wilson.

Wilson suffered from sepsis for a whole week before passing away. Sepsis is a condition in dogs that can develop when bacteria circulate in the body and settle in tissues, eventually leading to deadly infections.

Over the years, Wilson, a Bernese Mountain dog, has amassed a significant following thanks to the adorable snaps the golfer posted on his social media. Harrington has another Bernese Mountain dog named Setanta that will be his god in 2023. Setanta quickly became Wilson’s “new best friend.” The father-son duo loved going on walks, or more like, Wilson liked taking his dad out for a nice walk.

In a video posted by the PGA Tour on Facebook in 2023, the hilarious caption read, “Nice of Wilson to walk his dad. 😉 Padraig Harrington’s three major titles are no match for his dog Wilson’s stardom.” Wilson truly was a charming and beautiful dog. In the video, we can see Wilson trying to playfully pull the leash as the golfer held it in his hands. The Irish golfer revealed that Wilson had quite a fan following on X and Instagram, and likes to take the lead on things. As Parrington put it, “He’s the star of the show.”

The golfer revealed that he didn’t know how much he and his family could love the dog, but once they got him, they understood that soon your world starts revolving around them as you are always wondering where they are, and this is what happened with him. The story of Wilson’s name is just as special as he was.

Have an interesting take?

Why did Padraig Harrington name his late dog Wilson?

Well, Harrington’s love for his equipment sponsor eventually resulted in him naming his dog Wilson. Wilson Staff and Harrington have been working together for years, and the golf superstar was so fond of the company that he named his first pup after them. Wilson has been with the golfer through thick and thin ever since. He was seen with Harrington’s other dog, Setanta, at the 2023 Pro-Am at the Horizon Irish Open.

That was the first time Wilson had accompanied the golfer on the greens. Harrington was worried that his pet might not like the attention, but to his surprise, they were very well-behaved, enjoying all the attention, and staying cool in the shade. With Wilson’s arrival, Padraig’s golf game found a new furry good luck charm. Wilson cheered him on from the sidelines. And even though Padraig didn’t perform very well and ended up in the 79th spot, he knew he had a loyal friend waiting for him, but that is not going to happen anymore.

Other than going on greens with Harrington, Wilson loved going to a particular local Rathfarnham coffee shop and enjoying the time with his owner. While Wilson may not be with us anymore, his absence will always be felt by those who love him. Fly high on the rainbow bridge, Wilson! We hope you have an abundance of treats in heaven.
