Among all the sports, golf is by far one of the most expensive. Needless to say, a golf course is not a cheap affair. This aspect of the game is one of the few reasons why it is still restricted to many people. Among those trying to change that is the golf legend Tiger Woods, who even helped design the first public golf course, Payne’s Valley Golf Course.

The golf pro recently opened up about his mindset while designing the course. He wanted it to be an inclusive course. To do that, Woods had to ensure that the design allowed that too.

The 15-time major championship winner undoubtedly does everything in his power to make the sport more accessible. He has also designed many golf courses in his career. But this was different. Working with his golf course design firm, TGR Design, Woods created the first-ever public-access golf course.

In a recent video on Twitter, Woods was asked if the Payne’s Valley Golf Course was special to him because of its lack of access restrictions. He responded by saying, “Absolutely.” The golf legend went on to add that the reason he designed golf courses the way he did was that he wanted them to be “an open campus.”

The golf pro explained that that meant that anyone should have access to play on the course. “I want to build a design so that a nine-year-old can play and a ninety-year-old can play,” he said. “And also challenge the top talents.”

Woods explained that it needed “a lot of creativity.” He added that it was tricky and had to be done using angles and low-force carries. It also required “tremendous amounts of room off the fairways” and ample “runups around the greens.”

The 82-time PGA Tour winner went on to add that he wanted to build courses like the ones he liked. “The Sandbelt course in Australia” and “Links golf in Europe” were some of his favorites. Woods explained that these courses frequently kept the ball on the ground. He stated, “I enjoy the ball on the ground, just having that option.”

He wanted to give people the option of playing the ball on the ground too, instead of constantly swinging hard to get to the hole. “If you have an option, I think you should use the ground, and you should have the availability [to do so],” said Woods, explaining what he thought a golf course should be like.
