Just days ago, a PGA Tour insider revealed that the Tour won’t bar its players from participating in the LIV Golf Promotions tournament. But this apparently simple announcement also left many questions that have been circulating in the media since, without any clarification from any side. Turns out, it has even left players scratching their heads for answers as well.  Nine-time PGA Tour winner Patrick Reed spoke to the media about the speculations and rumors and what he makes of it.

The LIV Golf pro, known for his frankness, has never shied away from answering difficult questions. This time too, he didn’t hold back his thoughts when asked about the recent reports. While the 33-year-old golfer is excited to see who joins the fledgling league next year, he is also worried about something.

What does Patrick Reed think can happen next?

Currently in Fanling for the Hong Kong Open, Patrick Reed was speaking ahead of the tee-off on Thursday, November 9. The PGA Tour winner thinks the recent decision is a positive step forward. “Allowing guys to come over and play the Promotions event, you would think that’s a step in the right direction,” the Irish Golfer quoted Reed as saying.

But what happens if a Tour player qualifies? Will PGA Tour Commissioner Jay Monahan slap them with a ban? At this point, it’s anyone’s guess.  Reed, like most of us, is also in the dark. “They get onto LIV because they finished inside of the top three, do they get suspended right away, immediately, or do they want to play on both? So we’ll just wait and see because we don’t know how it’s all going to turn out.

But the 2018 Masters winner chooses to see the brighter side of things. “I’m going to be optimistic and hope that it means that everyone’s going to be getting along. Not without a bit of caution though, as he quickly adds, “But I don’t really know much about it; it’s all hypothetical and a guessing game.

Truly it has been a guessing game for most, including the PIF & PGAT officials. Despite reportedly being confirmed by a PGAT spokesman, the report is yet to be followed by any official announcement.

Will the qualified golfers be banned from the PGA Tour?

Reportedly, one PGA Tour insider spoke about some leeway given to PGA Tour players. Since the Promotions event, which opens the door to aspiring LIV Golf players, is a qualification tournament in nature and not part of the main league, the PGAT is not considering it as unauthorized. So, the PGA Tour players and Korn Ferry Tour players can try their luck.

However, there has not been any confirmation if the qualified players will be allowed to take part in the PGA Tour events as well. As the ban still stands on the golfers who switched sides earlier, in all likelihood, Monahan is still adamant in that respect.

The PGA Tour and PIF (Public Investment Fund), which bankrolls LIV Golf, has been locked in $3 billion worth of merger negotiations since June this year. Although the deadline of December 31 is fast approaching, there is no end in sight for the deal. As Patrick Reed admits, it’s indeed a guessing game.
