After months of wait, the TGL, created by Tiger Woods and Rory McIlroy is finally set to begin. It kickstarts in January 2025 with a format that has not been known to the golf world earlier. Everything will be digital, and it will be a team game. While the league has already received all the attention that it requires because of the big names, the marketing aspect still remains a core practice. And the players are on it, promoting the league.

Most recently, it was the turn for the Atlanta Drive GC to showcase its fame and promote the league. This team consists of Justin Thomas, Patrick Cantlay, Billy Horschel, and Lucas Glover. Lucas Glover was at the SoFi stadium trying to hit a shot. And well, not much needed to about him. It turned out to be a rather smooth one.

The official X account of the Atlanta Drive GC took to its wall and shared the video from the course. This will also be the venue for the TGL tournaments. In the caption they wrote, “Lucas Glover making it look easy.”

However, as it turns out, the promotion went wrong this time. Instead of being able to spread the news of TGL launching the fans only had concerning things to say about the league.

The golf community dubs TGL as a copy of LIV Golf

LIV Golf, which was labeled as the rebel league was launched in 2022. It has a format of having thirteen teams, each of which consists of four members. The names have been chosen by the captains, and they all have a back story to it. There are twelve tournaments, and each of them is played through three days, whichever player wins, not only scores points against his name, but his team also gets a certain amount of points. This eventually ends up in an Individual Championship and a Team Championship before the season comes to an end. Now the Team Championship has a lot of relevance to the TGL. Taking to this people left comments like, “Are they even using the same font as Liv for the names on screen?”

What’s your perspective on:

Is TGL just a LIV Golf copycat, or does it bring something new to the table?

Have an interesting take?

LIV Golf’s media strategy has faced criticism due to its limited reach, fragmented content, and reliance on exclusive broadcasting deals that restrict its audience. Unlike the PGA Tour, which benefits from wide media coverage and compelling player storytelling, LIV struggles to create engaging narratives or develop deep connections with fans. Its heavy emphasis on star players and flashy marketing can feel inauthentic, while the controversial backing from Saudi Arabia has further fueled negative public perception. These factors have hindered LIV’s ability to build a loyal, global following and present itself as a credible, fan-friendly alternative to the PGA Tour. Taking to this, one of them wrote,

“This just reminds me of LIV’s media strategy. Not meant to be a compliment. Expect a flash dance in a week or two. The logo looks similar to the Aces as well.”

It’s easier to play golf on the range than on the course because the range offers a controlled environment with no hazards, pressure, or varying conditions. On the course, you face different terrains, weather, and mental challenges, requiring more strategic thinking and shot execution. Taking to this, one of them commented, “Always easier at the range vs on the course.”

While another mocked and commented, “Why’s he playing golf in a dingy warehouse? Was he on his lunch break from his job at the Amazon fulfillment center?”

The TGL tournaments will be played indoors in a purpose-built Palm Beach arena. It will have players compete on a virtual course, as live fans get to witness it on a 3000 square foot projector. This concept is new to the golf world, and not everyone has accepted it. Taking to this, one of them even defended LIV Golf and wrote, “Golf “purists” talked shit about LIV “ruining the game” for 2 years because of a shotgun start & some Tiesto bumping in the background. At least they play golf outside on actual golf courses with grass & the elements unlike this complete farce we’re about to see come Jan 7.”
