Canadian golfer, Mackenzie Hughes, has informed netizens of his immediate retirement with a tweet that has caught the golf community by surprise. The 2-time PGA Tour winner makes the life-altering decision aged just 32. While he didn’t mention any specific reasons for his exit, the unforgiving nature of the sport has led to Hughes’ decision. Mackenzie Hughes announces surprise retirement

An up-and-coming Canadian golfer, Hughes tweeted a tongue-in-cheek comment about his retirement. While many were seemingly distraught on hearing the news, a few dug up the humor in the tweet. As it is, Hughes slyly mentions his retirement from fantasy football, not golf, which has left fans chuckling.

The statement made the rounds amongst golf fans, who at first were confused with the player’s decision. Indeed, Hughes recently won his second PGA Tour title, the Sanderson Farms Championship. He secured victory with a playoff win over Austrian golfer, Sepp Straka.

At the time of writing, the tweet has already garnered over 7,500 likes and nearly 200 retweets. There were several replies to Hughes’ infamous announcement as well, with many caught unaware after reading the initial few lines of the tweet.

Is Hughes actually retiring from golf?

As it stands, Hughes is years away from leaving the sport. The 32-year-old is only a few years into his PGA Tour career but has already shown glimpses of what he has to offer.

Hughes made his PGA Tour debut in 2016. He previously plied his trade at the PGA Tour Canada, commonly referred to as the Canadian Tour. He won his first-ever professional tournament at the 2013 Cape Breton Celtic Classic.

After steadily climbing his way to the top, Hughes won the Price Cutter Charity Championship, after which he earned the PGA Tour status for the 2016-17 season. The Canadian didn’t disappoint, securing victory in only his fifth tour start as a member, at the 2016 RSM Classic.

Hughes hasn’t won a major championship yet, with his best finish coming at the 2021 Open Championship. His sixth-place finish remains the best-ever finish for a Canadian at the Open. The Canadian golfer briefly held the lead in the 2021 U.S. Open and was on top of the standings at the end of the third round. However, he eventually finished T15.
