And then there were none. Three from the world’s top five were expected to tee off at Torrey Pines on the PGA Tour’s West Coast swing. Now, none will. With the big draws gone, only two from the world’s top ten remain in the field. It’s mostly been a case of late withdrawals from the $9.3M purse tournament at La Jolla, California. The reasons have been myriad: from injury troubles to LIV golf signings (rumored, of course). Nevertheless, here are the five names you won’t see at the Farmers Insurance Open this year.

Scottie Scheffler

To keep the first name out, World No.1 pulled out of the Farmers Insurance Open as he continues to recover from a freak hand injury. Scottie Scheffler suffered a puncture wound on his right hand while making Christmas dinner, ravioli, to be precise. Pieces of glass had to be removed through surgery. Scheffler appeared in a promotional media conference for the Arnold Palmer Invitational recently. From his words, it is evident that the two-time major winner is not going to rush his return, even though he has started working out in the gym. Scheffler notably skipped the Torrey Pines trip in the last two years as well. His best record is a T20 at the 2022 iteration.

Xander Schauffele

World No. 2 followed in the footsteps of the No. 1. Xander Schauffele’s withdrawal, though, surprised even the tournament organizers. The reigning Open champion is a native San Diegan who has never skipped the ‘home’ event. Schauffele’s agents cited medical reasons for the withdrawal—it wasn’t official since he never actually signed up. Most recently, Todd Lewis of Golf Channel reported that Schauffele was playing through a rib injury since late last year. Currently, he is resting and is doubtful about AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am, a signature event, as well.

It should be noted that Xander Schauffele will not be in the TGL lineup on January 21 against Atlanta Drive GC. The two-time major winner managed a T9 last year at Torrey Pines, his second top-ten after a T2 at the 2021 iteration. Notably, there were rumors of Schauffele joining LIV, which, however, looks unlikely at the moment.

Collin Morikawa

World No.4 is another miss at the 2025 Farmers Insurance Open. The former Open champion cited illness as the reason behind withdrawal. Collin Morikawa’s only appearance this year came in Hawaii. He knocked off a brilliant 32-under at the Sentry but came up short to snatch the title. Morikawa, notably, teed off at SoFi Center against Tiger Woods’s Jupiter Links GC, where LAGC thrashed Woods’s team to a 12-1 humiliation.

Interestingly, Morikawa was never a Farmers Insurance Open regular. He has teed off at Torrey Pines only thrice in his career. Other than a solo third in 2023, the two-time major champion has one missed cut and a T21 at La Jolla. Wesley Bryan of Bryan Brothers fame has entered the field in his stead.

Akshay Bhatia

Another one in the long list of withdrawals from the 2025 Farmers Insurance Open is Akshay Bhatia. Only this time, there hasn’t been any reason provided behind the withdrawal leading to speculations of pulling out due to the PGA Tour’s Genesis Invitational decision. Reportedly, Torrey Pines will host the signature event in February. That means playing in the same course twice in three weeks, which might be one of the reasons for the Tour’s top dogs pulling out of the first La Jolla trip. There is likely one more reason for his withdrawal, however.

Bhatia has played twice this year, opening his season with a T32 at the Sentry. The lefty then moved to the Middle East to tee off at the Hero Dubai Desert Classic, netting a T37 at Emirates Golf Club. The Farmers Insurance Open plays from Wednesday to Saturday, which meant a fast turnaround after the Dubai trip. The two-time PGA Tour winner’s lone Farmers Insurance Open appearance came in last year where he settled for a T13. He didn’t play in the Dubai Desert Classic last year, though. Bhatia’s place has gone to fellow left-handed golfer, Garrick Higgo.

Nicolai Hojgaard

The 23-year-old Dane, not to be confused with his twin brother Rasmus, has also pulled out of the $9.3M purse tournament. His rationale is likely similar to Akshay Bhatia’s. Nicolai Hojgaard was at Emirates Golf Club last week teeing off at the Dubai Desert Classic, barely managing a T65 at the par-72, 7,301-yard layout.

Nevertheless, Hojgaard’s absence will be felt at Torrey Pines after his spectacular show last year. The 23-year-old settled for a solo second behind Matthieu Pavon in his only appearance at the Farmers Insurance Open. Both Bhatia and Hojgaard are eligible for the next signature event, AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am.

Aside from these five, Mackenzie Hughes, a Farmers Insurance Open regular has also skipped the trip this time. The $9.3M purse tournament will start this Wednesday to avoid direct competition with NFL conference championship games on Sunday. Players tee off at both the North and South course for the first two rounds. The final two rounds are played on South Course.  You can catch all the actions live on the Golf Channel and NBC Sports app.
