And the showdown begins, quite literally this time. “The Showdown” by Crypto is set to tee off at Shadow Creek Golf Club in North Las Vegas, featuring four of golf’s finest: World No. 1 Scottie Scheffler and World No. 3 Rory McIlroy representing the PGA Tour, squaring off against LIV Golf’s Bryson DeChambeau and Brooks Koepka.

It’s a one-day, 18-hole clash with a twist: three formats packed into one round. The first six holes? Best ball. The middle six? Alternate shots. The final six? Singles match play. It’s a recipe for chaos and drama—a perfect blend for golf fans.

So be ready to be on the edge of your seat. But hey, wait, what is at stake this time? Well, this time the prize money isn’t your average oversized check—it’s cryptocurrency. The winner takes home a minimum of $10 million in crypto, courtesy of the event’s title sponsor, Crypto.com. Yes, you read that right: GOLF’s GONE DIGITAL.

Crypto.com isn’t exactly a small player in the digital finance world. With over 100 million users and support for 350+ cryptocurrencies, they’ve built a serious reputation—and a $13 billion valuation to back it up. Founded in 2016, Crypto.com has become pretty much a one-stop shop for everything crypto, offering services like trading, digital wallets, DeFi staking, and even an NFT marketplace.

Why crypto, though?

Over the years, teams and athletes have dabbled with crypto deals and payments. Nearly five years ago, former NFL offensive lineman Russell Okung posted a four-word statement to X, “Pay me in Bitcoin.”  Aaron Rodgers, Odell Beckham Jr., and Klay Thompson are among the other athletes who publicly said they would be converting part of their salaries to cryptocurrency. Trevor Lawrence was thought to have invested his rookie signing bonus into crypto.

This is a huge moment for golf as this is the first time a multimillion-dollar golf prize will be paid exclusively in crypto, and it’s hard to ignore the statement Crypto.com is making. They’re not just sponsoring—they’re showing that cryptocurrency is becoming a serious player in the sports world.

Bryson DeChambeau is all in, calling it “beyond exciting” to have Crypto.com on board for what he calls a “true first” in golf: “a cryptocurrency-based prize purse.” And yeah, it’s a game-changer. As per the reports, Crypto.com is putting up $8-10 million for the sponsorship, with the winnings paid out entirely in their native token, CRO.

What’s your perspective on:

Will crypto prizes revolutionize golf, or is this just a passing fad in the sports world?
