Is the Charles Schwab Cup Championship cursed by weather, or is this year a turning point?

The final event of the PGA Tour Champions will get underway this week. The Charles Schwab Cup Championship determines who will take home the Schwab Cup. Currently, Ernie Els leads that race. Defending champion Steven Alker and 2022 winner Padraig Harrington are also in the field. The bigger question, given how frequently Mother Nature has played spoilsport in big tournaments this year, is whether the $3M purse tournament will end without any delay.

Overcast conditions welcomed the players who drove to the practice range on Tuesday. However, that won’t be the case when the tournament starts. For most of the week, high and low temperatures will swing between mid-60s and mid-70s. The maximum temperature for Thursday is set to reach 68F. Windspeed won’t go further than 13 MPH from the north. There is little to no chance of rain, with the humidity levels staying at 20%.

The sky will clear out further on Friday, with the temperature reaching 70F by midday. Chances of rain are low; the humidity level is expected to stay at 23%. Wind speed will drop further to 6 mph from the southwest. The Weather Channel predicts moving day will be played under a sunny sky with maximum temperature reaching 74F. Humidity levels are expected to stay around 21% with no chances of rain.

The final round of the Charles Schwab Cup Championship will also be played under similar conditions. The maximum temperature won’t cross 78F, which is fairly pleasant by Arizona standards. The relative humidity will be 19%; the wind speed will be around 5 MPH. Certainly, it will be a welcome sign for the spectators. Because the Charles Schwab Cup Championship has had its fair share of weather troubles in the early days.

History of weather delay at the Charles Schwab Cup Championship

Back in 2010, the final round of the Charles Schwab Cup Championship was delayed by almost an hour because of rain. The downpour started Saturday night but continued the next morning, forcing the organizers to halt play. At that time, the tournament was hosted in TPC Harding Park in San Francisco.

Have an interesting take?

Two years prior, the season-ending tournament experienced similar troubles. At Sonoma Golf Club in California, the moving day was postponed due to heavy rain. Changing the venue to Phoenix Country Club seemed to work in the PGA Tour Champions’ favor. Notably, the 2020 iteration, which was held in the desert country, went for a Monday finish.

The final round playoff couldn’t be settled due to the setting sun. Players teed off again the next day. Kevin Sutherland outlasted Paul Broadhurst in the six-hole playoff. The 2024 Charles Schwab Cup Championship starts on November 7. Golf Channel will broadcast the tournament on all four days. Whereas, the NBC Sports App will livestream the Charles Schwab Cup Championship.
