Can Paul Waring finally clinch his second win, or will he crumble under pressure this weekend?

The 2024 Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship is almost halfway. The winner of the DP World Tour event will be declared on Sunday. Paul Waring from England will enter the moving day on the solo lead. The 39-year-old carded an impressive eagle on the par-4 sixth hole and went completely bogey-free through the second round. He is currently at 19 under after the first two rounds.

Following him are Johannes Veerman, Niklas Horgaard, Tommy Fleetwood, and Thorbjorn Olesen, who are five strokes behind him. Waring has only been able to grab one win at the 2018 Nordea Masters on the European Tour despite playing since 2008. If he continues the momentum, he might finally be able to grab his second win after six years.

Well, the tournament taking place in Abu Dhabi comes with a lot of other added benefits and advantages for the players, especially the winner. The victor will get an approximate 30.5 OWGR points. The points will be accessible based on the strength of the field. Additionally, there are a total of 9000 Race to Dubai points available for the full field. Winning the Hero Dubai Desert Classic brings significant rewards, including a two-season exemption on the European Tour and entry into other top events.

Paul Waring might have taken the lead, but he sure was not someone people thought would. Rory McIlroy kick-started the event as the fan favorite. However, as it turns out, the Friday round lowered his momentum.

Rory McIlroy slowed down due to a triple bogey

At seven under for the day, McIlroy teed off on the par-3 17th, hitting what he thought was a crisp 5-iron. The ball landed on the downslope and rolled into the right greenside bunker. After a splash-out, he was surprised by the lack of sand, sending the ball past the flag, over the green, and into another bunker. The shot left him with a triple-bogey 6.

Despite trying to compensate for the round with a closing bogey, he finished at 68. He is currently nine shots away from Paul Waring, at T14. But he has not yet given up hope. “I just have to go out tomorrow and try to get off to a fast start and get myself back into it,” said the Northern Irishman optimistically. Do you think he will be able to catch up through the weekend? Stay tuned to find out!
