While the PGA Tour’s Corales Puntacana Championship is taking place this week in the Dominican Republic, many top tour players are missing from the field. The reason: the WGC-Dell Technologies Match Play is also taking place this week! With the stakes as high as they are currently on the Tour, and a field as competitive as they get, the event promises an intense and drama-filled 5 days.
The field and format of the WGC-Dell Technologies Match Play
The Dell-Tech Match Play is quite different from a regular tour event. After all, as the name implies, this is a match. Players face off against each other, with the score being carded based on who wins the hole rather than on strokes. Austin Country Club is hosting this season’s match play, which began on Wednesday and will end on Sunday.

To win, the pros will have to play seven individual matches in total, including back-to-back single-elimination matches on Saturday and Sunday. 64 golfers take the field as they battle in 16 four-player groups playing a round-robin three-match plays. The winner from each pool will proceed directly to the knockout rounds.
On Saturday, the fans will get to witness the round of 16 and the quarterfinals. Following that, on the final day, the players who make it will face off in the semi-finals and then the final round. The likes of Jon Rahm, the defending champion, Scottie Scheffler, and world No. 3, Rory McIlroy, head the field at Austin this week. Each is undoubtedly looking to lift the Walter Hagen Cup.
Total prize money and the winner’s cut
The WGC-Dell Technologies Match Play sees a whoppingly huge purse of $20 million. Compared to last year, that is a huge $8 million increase. The winner will take home $3.5 million of that total purse, which is less than the standard 18% payout as per the PGA Tour’s prize money distribution chart.
Additionally, the entire field of 64 will take home a portion of the purse, with the last-placed player getting $66,667. The winner of the event will also receive 550 FedEx Cup points and 67 OWGR points, which are based on field strength. Moreover, the victor will win a 3-plus PGA Tour season exemption as well as berths into the Masters and the PGA Championship this year and the 2024 Sentry Tournament of Champions.
