After a thrilling week of the Charles Schwab Challenge, the PGA Tour will be hosting The Memorial Tournament next week. Presented by Workday the event is scheduled for next weekend from June 1 – 4 at Muirfield Village Golf Club in Dublin, Ohio. The annual tournament was founded by golf legend Jack Nicklaus, in 1976 who long cherished the dream of honoring golf entities and their contribution to the sport.

The tournament is held with three objectives – to honor the deceased yet distinguished player of golf, bring together the best golf players in the world as spectators experience the live thrill of seeing them competing, and benefit many Greater Columbus Charities in alliance with the Nicklaus Children’s Healthcare Foundation, other local organizations. The game will be played in four rounds with the final round on Sunday determining the winner.

Power ranking and defending players of the Memorial Tournament

This year will mark the 48th edition of the event which will be hosted by legend Jack Nicklaus like every year. The defending champion is last year’s Memorial Champion Billy Horschel, and rising star of golf Cameron Young who is yet to win a PGA tournament. The power ranking is as follows. First in the line to claim the prize is South Korean golfer Byeong Hun An, who turned professional in 2009, followed by amateur golfer from Texas, Sam Bennett.

On third position is three-time European Tour winner Christiaan Bezuidenhout, with Akshay Bhatia who is currently ranked World 181 and followed by Keegan Bradley who is currently ranked World no. 24. The event is the brainchild of the Golden Bear of golf, Jack Nicklaus, and is one of the most revered events of the PGA Tour. He wanted to honor the people who had contributed to the game of golf.

Prize purse breakdown of the Memorial

The prize purse is an impressive amount of $20,000,000, out of which the winner’s share will be $3.6 million. The second prize is $2.18 million and the third prize is $1.38 million. Here is the breakdown of its prize purse:

The prize purse had seen a big hike in comparison to last year where the prize purse was $12 million, out of which the winner Billy Horschel took home $1,308,000 followed by Aaron Wise as runner-up and Patrick Cantlay and Joaquin Niemann tying at the third position.
