The Charles Schwab Cup is the penultimate event on the PGA TOUR Champions, the senior circuit. The top 36 players on the ranking list before the event will proceed to Phoenix Country Club, Arizona. But how do they get the points? The money any golfer wins via securing a victory or a better spot in the leaderboard of various tournaments is then converted to points for the ranking.

Right now, Steven Stricker is leading the ranking while Bernhard Langer creeps behind. The 36 players will play in a 72-hole no-cut format. Here are our top choices for the contender of champion:

1. Steven Stricker: You guessed it right if you did. Stricker has had a blasting 2023 on the PGA Tour Champions. This year the 56-year-old collected $3.9 million in golf earnings. While winning 6 titles out of which there were 3 senior majors. The year is going spectacularly for Stricker as he is contending to win the Charles Schwab Cup regardless of whether he wins the event later this week.

Because Stricker is so far ahead of every other player, even if he doesn’t play the cup, he will take it. The Charles Schwab Cup crowns two champions every year, one the leading golfer in the ranking and another who wins the event. Stricker has a chance of winning both on the same day and we think he probably will!

2. Padraig Harrington: The defending champion himself. Harrington is coming off with a victory at the TimberTech Championship. We smell the snowball effect, however; the stats speak for themselves. The Irishman has won twice this season and at his latest triumph, Harrington had 7 strokes lead. Moreover, with nine top 10s in 12 runs and standing 4th in rankings, Harrington will  let anybody snatch his cup. In the history of PGA Tour Champions, Harrington will be the second golfer in the last 13 years to win the cup consecutively, if he wins.

3. Bernhard Langer: At the TimberTech Championship, Langer missed by 7 strokes to grab his third win this season. Standing second on the rankings with 2.3 million points and money earned this year, Langer is looking forward to winning the cup seventh time in his life. The 66-year-old veteran has had 12 top-10 finishes in 23 events he played. Langer is one of the few with a sparkling career on the senior circuit.

4. David Toms: In the last 8 events he played, Toms had 6 top-10 finishes. In the last appearance at the Old Course, Toms was tied at 6th with 1 over par. This year the 56-year-old won twice, once at the Cologuard Classic and again at the Galleri Classic. He stands 6th on the Charles Schwab Cup standings and is contesting to win the Cup for the first time.

5. Steven Alker: Last year, Alker won the Charles Schwab Cup for the first time by leading the standings. This year too, standing at 4th rank, Alker is contesting to give victory another shot. Although this year was not as assuming with only title and 11 top 10s, Alker can finish it off with style and claim the Cup himself for the second time!
