The DP World Tour stays in Johannesburg for the 2022 edition of the South African Open slated this weekend. The tournament has a significant historical background, considering it is one of the oldest national golf opens in the world. But it has seen its fair share of changes over the years, translating to the present event held jointly by the DP World Tour and the Sunshine Tour.

Records beckon at the South African Open
The event is being played alongside the Australian Open at the Victoria Golf Club, but that hasn’t stopped a strong roster from joining at the Blair Atholl. The course, at 8,161 yards, is the longest course in the world, making it an exciting prospect for range-hitters.
The defending champion this season, homeboy Danie van Tonder, is expected to lead the line once again. 37-year-old Oliver Bekker will be in contention again, having finished runners-up to Van Tonder by merely one stroke.
In a roster packed with exciting South African talent, expect another country-born golfer to win the tournament. The succession line was last broken in 2018 when Englishman Chris Paisley won the event. Since then, there have been four different South African on the summit, all debut winners at the event.
Among others, LIV golfers Branden Grace, Adrian Otaegui, and Hennie du Plessis are the ones to watch out for. Grace is a past winner at the event, securing the trophy in 2020. Spaniard Otaegui made headlines when he stormed to victory at the Andalucia Masters at Valderrama last month.
A majority of fans will be keen on the young Thriston Lawrence, who was named the DP World Tour Rookie of the Year. He has two wins on the Tour, including the 2021 Joburg title. A one-time victor in 2016, Brandon Stone is also on the roster, who won by two strokes at a time when the event was sponsored by car manufacturing giants BMW.
