The battle between the young golfers at St. Andrews last week to win the British Open ended with Cameron Smith becoming the champion. And it is time to find out who among the Senior players is capable of winning another R&A major, the 2022 Senior Open Championship!
The R&A began the Senior Open 35 years ago in 1987, unlike the British Open which had its 150th tournament this year. Notably, the King’s Course in Scotland, designed by James Braid, will host the event this year from July 21 to 24. And the viewers can watch the 19-hrs live coverage of the event through the NBC Sports and Golf Channel apps and websites.

Since it is one of the 5 reputed major competitions, many top-class players of the Senior Tour are present at the King’s Course. This includes Ernie Els, Bernhard Langer, and Darren Clarke. Before any of them wins the event, let’s find out what the tournament offers to its players!
The purse and the winner’s payout of the tournament
The purse money of the Open Championship is $2.5 million. The champion would bag the $720,000 out of the purse money, which is the standard 15 percent payout according to the PGA Tour Champion’s prize money distribution chart.

A cut will be made after Round 2 of the tournament, and only the Top 70 and the ties will advance to the last two rounds. And they can win the prize money only if they finish the final round.
Furthermore, each dollar earned this week would count as a regular season point to qualify for the Charles Schwab Cup playoffs in 2022. Notably, only the top 72 players would get into the event. And by winning the most points from the event, the winner will highly likely get a chance to qualify for it.

Winning the Senior Open will also help more points to have a chance to be in the top 5 by the end of the season. Notably, they will get a part of the $2.1 million bonus pool based on their standings. Furthermore, unlike the PGA Tour events, the PGA Tour Champions don’t offer Official World Golf Ranking points.
