Followed by a dominant victory for Team USA at the Presidents Cup, comes the 2022 Sanderson Farms Championship, which is PGA’s first Tour-sanctioned event of the season. Formerly known as the Magnolia Classic, the event will witness a record total purse heading into the new season.

What happened in the last edition of the Sanderson Farms Championship?

World No.12, Sam Burns, returns to the field fresh after winning two titles in 2021, including the Sanderson Farms Championship. He held off challenges from fellow Americans, Nick Watney and Cameron Young, with an impressive final day performance to secure the trophy.

Sharing the field alongside Burns will be the nominee for the PGA Tour Rookie of the Year, Sahith Theegala. Former winners, Ryan Armour, Peter Malnati, and Cody Gribble will be on show as well, thanks to their victories in 2017, 2015, and 2016 respectively.

The event used to be paired up with the Masters Tournament, acquiring the nickname ‘Mississippi Masters’. Since 2013, the tournament has been sponsored by Sanderson Farms and hosted by a non-profit organization called Century Club Charities.

Total Purse and winner’s share for the tournament

While last year’s purse surmounted a total of $7 million, recent radical changes in the PGA Tour have meant there has been an increase in prize money in almost all competitions. The Sanderson Farms Championship is no exception, with the total purse now standing at a healthy $7.9 million, an almost one million increase.

Consequently, the winner’s share has seen its valuation go up too. A victory at the Country Club of Jackson, Mississippi, will mean a cheque worth $1.42 million, almost double the amount of the same event in 2016.

But wait, there is more on offer, especially for the victor. The competition will guarantee FedEx Cup points for a chance to secure a berth in the season-ending finale. The winner of the Sanderson Farms Championship will also be awarded 500 FedEx Cup points, with other players granted points based on their rankings after the final round.
