The LPGA Mediheal Championship is set for a brand new host this year as the Women’s championship heads to California this weekend. The likes of Atthaya Thitikul, Danielle Kang, and Min Lee, among others, take charge of what could be their inaugural victory at The Saticoy Club in Somis.

What’s special about the LPGA Mediheal Championship this year?

After taking place at the Lake Merced Golf Club in Daly City for the past three editions, the tournament moves from San Francisco to California on a brand-new golf course. That’s not the only change this year – the championship has been moved in the schedule to be played in October after previously being contested during the month of May.

The 2021 edition of the event found space in the history books, as Matilda Castren became the first Finnish golfer to win on the LPGA Tour. She carded a bogey-free last round for 65 at Lake Merced to steer clear of closest challenger, Min Lee, to secure her first win on the Tour.

The 27-year-old marks her return as the defending champion, and so does Lee. However, the roster is headlined by World No.2, Atthaya Thitikul. The 19-year-old upcoming superstar is already making waves on the circuit, claiming her second title of the year at the Walmart NW Arkansas Championship a fortnight ago.

The American charge will be led by 29-year-old, Danielle Kang, who is participating in her fifth event since making a comeback after getting diagnosed with a tumor on her spine earlier this year. The 2017 KPMG Women’s PGA Championship winner will be hoping to add another silverware to the year after a victory in January’s Hilton Grand Vacations Tournament of Champions.

The breathtaking Saticoy Club in California

The newly opened Saticoy Club is located on the backdrop of stunning views among the hills of Somis, California. The altitude and the panoramic nature of the course will leave golfers spellbound, but don’t let it fool you on your impressions of the golf course itself.

Designed by Billy Bell Jr with influence from renowned architects such as Robert Muir Graves, Tom Doak, and John Harbottle, the natural contour on the greens makes putting much more difficult than anticipated. The course covers a total length of 6,883 yards of Bermuda grass for a course rating of 73.6.

Total Purse and winner’s share for the 2022 LPGA Mediheal Championship

The total purse at this year’s Mediheal Championship has been increased from $1.5 million to $1.8 million. The winner will receive a standard 15% of the share, with that amount coming out to be $270,000.

Apart from the prize money, there are other incentives for the victor. 500 CME Globe points are on offer for a chance to contest at the season-ending CME Group Tour Championship. The winner of this championship wins the CME Globe and secures a whopping $1.5 million as prize money.
