Throughout the events of the PGA Tour Champions, all the money the players earn is converted to points. 54 players with the highest points go on to the second leg, and the top 36 go on to the final game, which is the Charles Schwab Cup Championship.
The Charles Schwab Cup Championship format
The Charles Schwab Cup Championship’s format is different from that of the regular tour tournaments. It is a 72-hole event. The 36 total fields are split into 18 twosomes for the initial two rounds. The players compete within the same group on both days, with the same pairs playing together.

In the third and fourth rounds, pairings and tee times are all based on how each player did in the second and third rounds. Players with the highest overall score proceed first, followed by the two with the next highest, and so on. This continues, with the final group being the last two players, who have the lowest scores.
The Championship is a no-cut event. This means that even after 36 holes, no players are cut, and the entire field is eligible to play all four rounds. Phil Mickelson won the event last year, but he has since signed with LIV Golf, so he won’t be there to defend his title.
The purse and split of the Charles Schwab Cup Championship
The 2022 Charles Schwab Cup Championship sees a total purse of 2.5 million USD, of which the winner will receive $440,000 in prize money. The total purse is split up among the entire field of 36.
After the event, the winner of the Charles Schwab Cup is also determined based on points. Bernhard Langer was the one who won it last year, for the sixth time. The top five players in the Charles Schwab Cup receive a bonus. The winner receives a million dollars, while the runner-up receives $500,000. The third and fourth places get $300,000 and $200,000, respectively, while the fifth player wins $100,000. This is in addition to their winnings in the championship.
