Mastering golf in links isn’t for everybody, especially when it’s the prestigious Pebble Beach Golf Links. The notable golf course is currently hosting Carmel Cup, a female amateur golf tournament. Though it may be an amateur golf tournament, a 19-year-old Stanford sophomore has already made history on the golf course.

With four wins during her freshman year at Stanford which also include the NCAA Championship, Rose Zhang earned the college golf’s national player of the year award. With all the success in her early college years, Zhang had the hype surrounding her. And it’s safe to say, the rising golfer lived up to the hype.

Zhang added another remarkable feat to her resume during the second round of the Carmel Cup at Pebble Beach Golf Links. The golfer shot nine-under 63, with an eagle and seven birdies, setting the women’s competitive course record.

Previously, Brittany Lincicome was the recipient of the record with 64 shots. She made the record last year during the TaylorMade Pebble Beach Invitational. However, Zhang’s 63 bested the 64 of Lincicome.  On the other hand, the men’s course record is 61, set by Hurly Long during a college event in 2017. Tom Kite (1983), David Duval (1997), and Patrick Cantlay (2021) all shot 62s during the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am.

The historical 63 under par of Zhang came after she opened with a four-under 68 on Friday. She further lifted her score to a 13-under 131 total, which ties Stanford’s school record for a low 36-hole score set the previous spring. Ahead of the final round on Sunday, Zhang has taken a 5-shot lead over Jennie Park, a student of Texas A&M. Stanford also leads the team competition by nine shots over the Aggies.

The No. 1 ranked amateur has grown a habit of winning as she won the Mack McCormack Medal two weeks ago. Zhang will also be competing at next year’s Women’s US Open, which is set to take place at Pebble Beach. Considering her recent success in the links, Rose Zhang will have no issues competing against the Pros at the golf course.
