Is Justin Thomas's winless streak a sign of decline or just a temporary setback?

So close, yet so far! That’s been the story of Justin Thomas’s recent tournaments, but will this dry spell continue? Perhaps not; competing at the 2024 Zozo Championship in Japan, Thomas is looking forward to grabbing his fifth Asian win. After Friday’s impressive bogey-free round, hopes are high that this tournament might bring him the victory he’s been chasing. But how does Justin Thomas feel about not winning in such a long time?

During a recent interview, he opened up about the challenges of being in this position. “It’s obviously tough. Winning is hard, no matter who you are,” he said. “If you happen to have a couple of hot streaks, it can make it look easier to everyone, including yourself.” It’s been precisely 889 days since he last lifted a trophy at a PGA Tour event back in May 2022. The following year was rough, with 2023 being a down year for him and missing out on the FedEx Cup Playoffs. Fast forward to 2024, and while things have improved, he still hasn’t found that elusive win.

But let’s not forget his past successes: two victories at the CIMB Classic in Malaysia and two more at the CJ CUP in South Korea show he knows how to perform in Asia. Echoing the same, the PGA tour pro reflected, “It has been a while, but I’ve still won a pretty good amount of golf tournaments. I know how to win. It’s just a matter of executing and doing it and that’s really been the biggest difference.” While he feels confident about his past victories, the golfer remained grounded when discussing his expectations for the future.

“You have to do a lot of things really well and you have to beat a lot of really good players. I have a lot of faith in myself and my game, but I can’t control what the other guys do. I’ve just got to play the best I can and believe that it will be good enough, said Thomas. Indeed, his modest approach is appreciable, but the real question remains: can he finally break the drought and claim the trophy at the 2024 Zozo Championship?

Will Justin Thomas emerge victorious in 2024?

Currently sitting in second place on the leaderboard, just behind Nicolas Echavarria, JT is proving to be a formidable competitor in the Zozo Championship. On Friday at Accordia Golf Narashino Country Club, Thomas reminded everyone was he is a 15-time PGA Tour champion. The highlight? A near-albatross on the par-5 18th, where his 5-iron shot flirted with the hole before settling just a few feet away. He finished the day with a six-under-par 64, sitting at 10 under and just two shots off the lead with 36 holes to go.

His shot on the 18th was something special. From 214 yards out, he hit a beautiful 5-iron that looked destined for glory. “I just took a little bit off of a 5-iron and cut it off the left center of the green,” he said. “I think hitting it in there to four feet was a bonus, but that’s the advantage of soft greens and hitting a good shot.” As for the third round, the 31-year-old remains consistent with his brilliant performance by making birdie on the par-5 14th hole.

Sharing contentment over his performance, Thomas said, “I feel really, really good about where everything’s at and how I’ve played the last couple days.” But this Zozo Championship is more than just another tournament for JT – it’s a big moment for him and could mark the end of his winless streak. Moreover, it will also be his last event before he becomes a father. The couple are expecting to welcome their first child by late November. And who knows, this little one might bring him the luck for he needs to snag the victory.

So, what do you think – will JT finally claim the trophy at the 2024 Championship? Let us know in the comments.
