The WM Phoenix Open is one of the PGA Tour’s most famous events. Fans from all around the world flock to Arizona to watch the pros battle it out on the course. Often celebrities and other famous stars are spotted at the famous 16th hole to enjoy the thrill of the event first-hand. Recently, the WNBA great Brittney Griner too was sighted at the hole. But not many in the golf world were thrilled to see her, and the fans were split in their emotions about the controversial star.

Golf World fumes at Brittney Griner

Recently, Sports Illustrated took to Twitter to post a picture of the two-time Olympic gold medalist at the Phoenix Open. Captioning the photo of her standing at the 16th hole stands, they wrote, “Brittney Griner is at the 16th hole in Phoenix.” The WNBA star was certainly there, just like all the other fans, for the unique experience of the TPC Scottsdale 16th hole and to cheer on the golf pros.

But many in the golf world were unquestionably furious that she was there. They harshly lashed out at the WNBA star, stating that there was nothing to celebrate and some also called her “trash.”

The fans also added that they did not care about the WNBA pro being at the course and that she was irrelevant to them. They further mentioned that she was just one of hundreds of thousands.

But the crowd also had those who were more than happy to see Griner at the event. They were certainly glad that after all her controversy; she was finally able to enjoy herself and attend one of the Tour’s most exciting events.

Nearly a year ago, the WNBA star was arrested in Russia on a drug possession charge. The Russian courts had declared her guilty of drug possession and sentenced her to prison for nine years. But the American side fought on for Griner. Eventually, it was agreed that she would be released if the USA in turn swapped a prisoner with them.
