Lydia Ko and Lexi Thompson Create ‘Special’ History With Their Efforts to Grow the Women’s Game

Women’s recognition in sports has been growing a lot lately. The sporting communities seem to be moving in the right direction. The golf community, in particular, has seen some massive progress of late. And yet another step forward was taken recently, involving Lydia Ko and Lexi Thompson.

The LPGA Stars now feature in the famous PGA Tour video game and are playable characters.

The advancement of the PGA Tour Videogame

The PGA Tour video game series is a golf game that is developed by Electronic Arts (EA). The game initially began in 1998, with Tiger Woods as the face of the series. Since then, it has grown quite a bit, both in gameplay and in the gaming community, and is available for the PlayStation, Xbox, and PC.

The game lets the player control any golfer from a multitude of choices, and use them to play on the course. The player attributes in the game are based on the players’ real-life skills and style of play. The 2023 version of the game is, PGA Tour 2K23. And it features two new players on its roster. Lydia Ko and Lexi Thompson

It’s the first time in the history of the game that a woman can play as a professional golfer. They even have their own iconic game kits. Although they have a long way to go, it seems like a good start for the series. Both Ko and Thompson were incredibly honored to be a part of the game.

Lydia Ko sees her inclusion in the game as an achievement

Ko, in an interview, said, “It’s exciting to be part of the PGA Tour 2K franchise and helps show the growing audience for LPGA.” The widely popular golf game will certainly draw more attention to the LPGA with Ko and Lexi’s involvement. Ko also went on to add how this was a huge moment for her. She said, “Being a playable pro in PGA Tour 2K23 has been a special moment for me professionally and personally.” It was a recognition of her hard work.

Lexi had a similar view on the matter. She said, “It is a great honor to be featured in PGA Tour 2K23.” The LPGA Star also went on to speak of how this would ensure that the LPGA would “grow and expand” its audience. She stated, “The response has been overwhelmingly positive, and it shows LGPA’s prominence.”
