In 2008, the LPGA Tour legend retired from the sport, even though she made a comeback later. Since then, she has been running her business and her charity, The Annika Foundation. Having received so much from the sport, the foundation is Sorenstam’s way of giving back to the community.

For that too, she has now received recognition. The 72-time LPGA Tour winner recently attended the Thurman Munson Dinner in New York. There, along with three other athletes, she received an accolade for her exemplary service both in the sport and in her charitable ventures, as well as for working towards the betterment of golf.
New York Yankees catcher Kyle Higashioka, New York Mets centerfielder Brandon Nimmo, and Mets manager Buck Showalter also received the Thurman Munson Award at the 43rd annual ceremony.

The 10-time major winner is the first ever golfer to receive this honor, and it stands as a testament to her work, even Tiger Woods has yet to earn one. “It’s an honor to receive the Thurman Munson Award,” she said, as per the LPGA’s official website. “Especially to be a female golfer, getting an award in a baseball player’s name in a baseball town with others in baseball is pretty special.” Stemming from Sweden, the golfer admitted that she didn’t know much about baseball. But one thing she did know was that it was an honor like no other.
“Anytime you are recognized for sportsmanship, betterment of your sport, and integrity, it is an honor,” stated the ex-golf pro. With her latest achievement, Sorenstam is now also the first Swede to ever win the award. She has done well to make a whole country as well as an entire sport proud. With her latest award, she now sands alongside the likes of Muhammad Ali and Theresa Weatherspoon who have won it before.
