In a first for this century, two brothers are competing at the Open Championship. England’s Matt and Alex Fitzpatrick are in competition with each other for the coveted trophy and the prestigious title. Such a situation last occurred in the 1960s between brothers Geoffrey and Bernard Hunt.

And while the boys are busy focusing on their performances it is their parents who are worried. As the competition forces them to make the difficult choice of one above the other, the elder son comes to their rescue and eases their worries.

A historic week for the Fitzpatrick family at the Open Championship

It is a proud day for Russell and Susan Fitzpatrick but also a tense one. Proud since both of their talented sons are competing at the prestigious Open Championship and tense for the same reason. As both compete for the first prize at the Open Championship they have ended up in a pickle on which son to support. But coming to their rescue is their elder son. Matt gave some insight into how he relaxed his parents by easing their dilemma in such a delicate situation. Apparently, Matt told his parents not to worry about himself but rather focus on Alex which according to Matt is more important.

Golf Magic shared the statement of Matt.

Matt said“No. I told them to go focus on him. That’s more important. This is my, what, ninth, so they’ve seen all nine of those. This is his first, so that’s more important.” With this statementMatt showed the qualities of a good elder brother by shifting his parents’ attention to Alex who is playing his first major championship while Matt has played in many of them.

A view of Matt and Alex Fitzpatrick’s career achievements

Matt turned professional at the debut at the 2014 Irish Open after which he won many events. In 2016 he won the Nordea Masters which boosted his rank to 32nd place and also the DP World Tour Championship, Dubai. He followed it up by winning Omega European Masters twice in 2017 and 2018. His biggest victory came at the 2022 US Open where he claimed his first major championship. As for Alex who turned pro last year, he had an impressive amateur career and won such events as the 2020 Golf Club of Georgia Amateur Championship and 2021 Valspar Collegiate, Old Town Club Collegiate.
