The PGA Tour is by far the most competitive golf tour in the world. Winning at it is hard enough, and yet some’ve done so multiple times. Among them is Phil Mickelson, who’s won 45 times on the Tour. Among those, his first win is one of his greatest. It came 32 years ago when he was just an amateur and a college junior. It recently even earned praises from the former coach of the golf legend Tiger Woods.

Lefty defected to LIV Golf in June last year. Since all LIV golfers are now banned from playing on the Tour, Mickelson is likely to only reminisce about his past Tour wins. And this is as far back as it goes, to 1991.

Phil Mickelson accomplishes something Tiger Woods never did

32 years ago, on the 13th of January, Mickelson created history. The golf pro won his first PGA Tour event. Not only was he only 20 years old then, but he was also an amateur. Lefty went pro the following year. He became only the seventh amateur to win a Tour event, a feat so extraordinary that no one has done so since.

Hank Haney recently took to Twitter to commemorate the 45-time PGA Tour pro’s extraordinary achievement. While sharing a video of the 1991 Mickelson win, he wrote, “That was an incredible accomplishment by @PhilMickelson.”

Woods himself played in a few Tour events as an amateur before turning pro in 1996. The golfing legend mostly competed in major championships. The highest he ever placed was when he tied for 22nd in the 1996 PGA Championship, soon before turning pro.

Mickelson’s first Tour win came by a very narrow margin

His first Tour victory, like many others in his 30-year career with them, was fraught with drama and anxiety. As a 20-year-old, he beat two pros by a stroke to take home the win at the Northern Telecom Open.

Following a beautiful drive, Mickelson needed to make an eight-foot putt for a birdie. Only a birdie would see him take the win, or else the match would proceed to a playoff between him, Tom Purtzer, and Bob Tway, who only lost to him by a stroke. As the whole audience went silent, Mickelson slowly putted the ball and watched it roll into the hole. Drama-filled, he won his first of 45 events on the Tour.
