After a year to forget, the former World No.1 Garbine Muguruza reunites with coach Conchita Martinez for the 2020 season, with whom the Spaniard won the 2017 Wimbledon Championships title.

Conchita Martinez confirmed their partnership as she wrote in a tweet, “Garbine and I will work together for 2020 season. With new challenges and enthusiasm. Thanks to all who will be supporting us in this new way. Come on!!”

It will be the third time that Conchita Martínez will be tutoring Garbine Muguruza, although she coached the Spanish star temporarily for the previous two times due to the withdrawal of Sam Sumyk. She coached Muguruza for the first time in mid-2017 and the second, in early 2018.

Earlier, Muguruza parted ways with her longtime coach Sam Sumyk after losing to Beatriz Haddad Maia in the first round of the Wimbledon Championships 2019 in July.

Muguruza was left with no coach after Sumyk left in early July. However, Anabel Medina, who is also the captain of the Spanish Federation Cup team, accompanied her at the US Open 2019 but the change did not improve her results.

In the 2019 season, Garbine Muguruza played 36 games, of which she won 22. She could manage to win only one title at the 2019 Monterrey Open. Furthermore, she could not pass the round of 16  in any of the four grand slam events and lost in the opening round of the 2019 Wimbledon Championships and the 2019 US Open. She also dropped to World No.35 in the WTA rankings.

On the other hand, Conchita Martinez trained the World No.2 Karolina Pliskova and helped her to qualify for the Shiseido WTA Finals 2019 in Shenzhen, where she reached the semifinals, losing to Ashleigh Barty in the last four. However, the two separated a couple of weeks ago.
